2nd Term Examination in Highway Engineering

Name: _________________________________________________ Score: ______________

Course and Year: _________________________________________ Date: ______________

Instruction: Solve the following problems neatly and orderly. All answers should be HANDWRITTEN. Take a picture
of your answers and make it as One (1) PDF File only. In taking pictures, make sure it is readable and orderly.

1. A particular station has the following earthwork cross-section below. If the width of the road base is 9m
and the side slopes are 1V:1.5H, compute for x and y.

9.0 4.5 4.5 𝑥

+ 2.0
𝑦 +4.0 +2.0 +1.0

2. Given the following cross-section notes for a road grading work below. The road bed is 9m wide and the
side slope for cut is 1:1 and for the fill is 1.5:1. Determine the area of cut of the section.
−3.2 +1.2 +1.2 +2.8
𝑋1 0 3.5 𝑋2

3. The areas in cut of two irregular sections that are 65m apart are 36 sq.m. and 72 sq.m. respectively. The
side slope is 3H:2V and the base width is 10m. Using prismoidal correction, find the corrected volume of
cut in cu.m. between the two stations.

4. The distance between two stations X and R is 60m. From station X having center height of 1.4m (fill), the
ground makes a uniform slope of 5% to station R having a center height of 2.8m (cut). The side slope for
both cut and fill is 2:1 and the roadway width is 14m, determine the cross-sectional area of cut 48m from
station X.

5. A highway curve has a length of 90m and a radius of 80m. how far off the center of the road could you
allow the grasses to grow if the required sight distance is 60m?

6. A -3.4% grade intersect a 5% grade at elevation 42.30 and at station 1+990. The design velocity of the
parabolic curve is 60kph. The height of driver’s eye from the road pavement is 1.37m and the height of an
object over the pavement ahead is 100mm. Assume the perception-reaction time to be 0.75 sec and the
coefficient of friction between pavement and the tire is 0.15. Determine the elevation of highest point on
curve.

7. A driver travelling at 50mph is 80 meters from a wall ahead. If the driver applies the brakes immediately
(perception time is 2 seconds) and begins slowing the vehicle at 10 meters per square seconds, find the
distance from the stopping point to the wall.

8. An SMU engineering student is driving on a level roadway and sees a construction sign 600ft. ahead in the
middle of the roadway. The student strikes the sign at a speed of 35 mph. If the student was travelling at
55 mph when the sign was first spotted, what was the student’s associated perception-reaction time?
Assume that the deceleration is 11.2 ft per sq.sec.
