LECTURE # 1

Essence of Energy Management and Auditing

Friday, June 18, 2021

Introduction
What is energy?
 Scientific definition: ‘the capacity to perform work’.
 Important facts about energy
 We use energy to perform various tasks including heating, producing food and
products, light up houses and streets, and many others.
 Energy appears in various forms such as gravitational energy, kinetic energy,
mechanical energy, electrical energy, radiation energy etc.
 The total amount of energy is always conserved but however the forms of
energy may change in time.
 If we want energy to work for us, it must be changed from one form to another
for example electric motor turns electrical energy into mechanical energy

 What is the biggest human kind challenge?
 The biggest challenge facing human kind is
tackling the impending energy problem
 Why is energy problem a concern?
(a) Supply- demand problem
 Demand is constantly growing as the world
population grows.
 Energy consumption per capita is linked to
living standard of a country and therefore
increase in demand for example China, India etc.

(b) Energy shortage attributed by several factors:

 Increase in energy demand causing an
economic impact in energy availability.
 Conflicts in oil producing countries example
Iraq war etc.
 Over dependence on fossils fuels energy
infrastructure causing spike in prices e.g.
1970’s.
 Depletion of fossil fuels than they are being
replaced. Fossils fuels are not sustainable in
nature.
 The cost of getting out fossil fuels out of the
ground.

(c) Environmental challenges

 Burning of fossil fuels produce
green house gases.
 The additional green house gases
are thrown into the ocean and the
atmosphere
 The world of science believes
that the impact of green house
gases is responsible for global
warming and climate change.

To address effectively the objectives of energy management the followings
basic queries must be answered:
 How much energy is energy consumed?
 How is the energy consumed?
 Where is the energy consumed?
 When is the energy consumed?
 What is the quality of the energy consumed?

In order to address these queries, ‘Energy Audits’ are conducted.

Now, let us understand the basics of ‘audits’
