HEAT TRANSFER BY CONDUCTION

1) AIM –

1. To find the thermal conductivity of a material by the two slabs guarded hot plate
method.
2. To find the thermal resistance of the sample.

2) FORMULA USED –

Power (Heat) = V*I

Th = (T1 + T2+ T3 + T4) / 4
TC = (T5 + T6) / 2
TGP = (T7 + T8) / 2
K = V*I*d/ [A*(Th - Tc)]

3) OBSERVATION TABLE –

S.no voltage Current Heat(V*I) Hot End Temperature

. (mA) T1 T2 T3 T4 Th
1. 100 2 200 6.53 7.28 7.26 7.28 7.08
2. 110 3.1 341 18.16 14.73 18.24 18.15 17.32
3. 120 4 480 8.09 9.08 8.92 9.08 8.79
4. 130 4.8 624 9.68 9.98 9.74 9.98 9.84

T5 T6 TC T7 T8 TGP
6 6 6 13.4 7.28 10.34 0.3538
6 6 6 15.61 16.48 16.04 0.3810
6 6 6 8.92 9.08 9 0.3287
6 6 6 9.74 9.98 9.86 0.3105

4) CALCULATION –

Material used – Asbestos - Cement board

Diameter – 20 cm
Thickness – 0.6 cm
Cold Water Temperature – 60 C
Th = (6.53 + 7.28 + 7.26 +7.28) / 4 = 7.08
TC = (6 + 6)/2 = 6
TGP = (13.4 +7.28) / 2 = 10.34
R = 10 cm
A = 3.14 * (10)2 = 314 cm2
K = 100 * 2 * 0.6 / [314 * (1.08)] = 0.3538 Wm -1K

5) RESULT –

Thermal conductivity of the given specimen by conduction = 0.3538 Wm-1K
