Subject: Personal statement on Application for Chinese   Government Scholarship Msc Program
for 2021-2022 Academic Year at Yangtze University

My name is Olyad Emana Jiru. I am from Ethiopia. Academically, I got my diploma in Biology from
Jimma Teachers College, Ethiopia on July 7, 2013. Then I was employed as a technical assistant at the
department of Biology, Jimma University, Ethiopia. I am currently serving at Jimma University as a
Senior Laboratory technician by assisting various research and laboratory works in the area of seed plant,
plant physiology, bryophytes and pteridophytes, entomology and plant biotechnology, courses to
undergraduate students and assisting postgraduate students in laboratory and field works with senior staff
members of the university for six years. Moreover, I am an active member and participant in the
Biological Society of Ethiopia (BSE). At the same time, I have attended my education on part time basis
and have got my bachelor degree in Biology on February 11, 2021 from Jimma University.

I trained and passed through the community based educational philosophy of Jimma University. I have
taken courses such as community-based training program I (CBTB I) and community-based training
program II (CBTB II) in 2018 and 2019 academic years respectively. Through these courses I defined and
assessed major problems of the community in Kersa district (Woreda), Jimma zone, South west Ethiopia.
In the process I learned problem identification, prioritization and intervention techniques to solve societal
felt needs and wants. The community-based education program of the university provides me better
opportunities to materialize the knowledge and experience I gained in the entire study period.

I was graduated with great distinction, CGPA of 3.93. My senior research entitled “The Efficacy of Some
selected Pesticides (Acaricides) against Two- Spotted Spider Mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari:
Tetranychidae) from Ethiopia” was selected the first best paper of all student’s research of College of
Natural Sciences and presented on the annual research symposium and won an award merit of certificate
from the College of Natural Sciences, Jimma University. I have a very good computer skill in MS Word,
Access, Excel and some statistical software packages. I am very much interested and enthusiastic in
laboratory-based research activities. I have very good academic records in all the trainings I attended in
higher learning institutions and demonstrated strong academic potential and maturity. I developed a very
good experience and skill in laboratory techniques through handling and conducting multiple biological
laboratory activities and I believe that I can successfully complete the advanced studies if I will be given
the opportunity. Due to all these facts, I believe I can successfully complete the advanced studies at your
university if I get the opportunity to pursue my MSc studies in Crop Science.

In tropical countries like Ethiopia, crop pests are the most harmful organisms that can greatly reduce the
yield of production. Studies indicated that the major challenges facing agricultural scientists today is the
need to secure food for an increasing world population. This growth occurs predominantly in developing,
mostly in tropical countries, where the majority of people live and can easily be affected by the problem
related with food security. Very obviously Ethiopia, now a days is one of the poorest nation in the world.
The nearest statistic estimation indicates that the population is rising at alarming rate reaching well over
110 million.

On the other hand, the people are suffering great deal of problems indicating pest and malnutrition.
Agriculture is traditionally the sole source of income and employment for almost all of the population.
Sadly, the agricultural or farming system of the country is entirely nature dependent and thus usually
affected by drought and crop pests exposing millions of people to starvation and death. In Ethiopia
reducing yield lose caused by pests of tropical agricultural crops is one measure that can contribute to
increased food production. But the effects of agricultural, environmental and socioeconomic changes on
the occurrence of pest and cause are largely undocumented. This is due to one of the less attentions paid
by the policy makers. On top of this problem, there is severe shortage of experts to create awareness and
take responsibility of developing and managing the sector.

If you grant me the opportunity, I will acquire basic theoretical and practical skill with broader
multidisciplinary knowledge of crop science from well experienced professors at Yangtze University. I
don’t believe that chemical control of crop’s pest is not sufficient. So, I hope it will equip me with method
of integrated pest management and crop production. Moreover, it develops my research skills and
understanding in working with senior university professors in the field. Furthermore, it will enable me to
understand how fundamental knowledge can be transformed into solutions for agricultural related
problems, biological control methods and sustainable management of crop pests.

It will enable me to recognize crop pest problems and the methods to attempt these problems in detail.
Above all, I will better acquire detail scientific knowledge; develop capacity to analyze and solve
problems and carry out an independent basic qualitative and quantitative research to contribute sound
development achieved by ensuring social, economic and environmental sustainability. The knowledge
that I gain from the MSc programme will equip me with recent state-of-the-art, skill and practice of the
field which is very crucial in addressing the shortage of skilled human power in my university in
particular and the country in general. Moreover, the training will enable me to further develop and
improve my skills and help me to continue with my effort to participate in the national poverty alleviation
program.

On completion and returning back home, beside teaching crop science and other related agricultural
courses in Biology Department and College of Agriculture and Veterinary undergraduate students, I
have a plan to take an active role in the university and communicate my knowledge and skills I have
acquired from the programme to my fellow department members, the surrounding community, the local
and regional government and non-governmental organization and other concerned research organizations
and centres to put into practical use through research and make the community beneficiary of the skills,
the experience and knowledge I have got from the studies for the betterment of the lives of the
communities. Furthermore, I will try to organize feasible short-term trainings in Jimma University in
collaboration with members from College of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine to inform and teach the
farming community around Jimma town and its environs about the significance of crop pest in
recognition of the symptoms, treatment and sustainable management. I will make effort to see progress
through the designed training and then seek for further support and development by mobilizing the
farming community, the university and other governmental and non-governmental organizations to keep
its sustainability. Hence, in the process I will add a lot to my institute, the surrounding community and my
country for the development of the field at local and national level in teaching, consulting and conducting
research.

On the other hand, China is one of the fastest growth countries in the world by different aspects. Example
by science, economy, culture and many technologies are generated to solve the world problem. so, if i get
the chance to study in your country, I will gain skills and knowledge from the peoples of china and share
for my country when I will come back.

Finally, I hope that your good office will genuinely assess my documents and consider my application as
a suitable candidate for the announced MSc scholarship. I am looking forward to hear good news from
you soon. Finally, allow me to extend my best regards and appreciation to coordinators and the selection
committee.
