2 Getting Started
Overview NXOS is the operating system for NEXIO video servers. You can use NXOS
to do the following:
All content is stored in MediaBase, the repository for all the video server’s
content. You can use MediaBase to do the following:
NEXIO Playlist Support for launching new NEXIO PlayList application. NEXIO PlayList
Features is a application external to NXOS, providing all the features of the
legacy PlayList plus incorporating numerous bug fixes into a new,
cleaner look. The legacy version of PlayList embedded within NXOS is
still available as an option for those sites not desiring the update.
AFD, ARC, Aspect NEXIO AMP Release 5.5.0 provides support for changing the current
Ratio Features aspect ratio of SD clips. As a result SD clips that have been ingested
incorrectly as one aspect ratio can be converted to the other aspect
ratio on play out. Support for this conversion is provided inside NXOS
and via the protocol interface (see NEXIO Software Developer Kit
version 3.6).
Customers now have the option to override existing AFD and/or insert
new AFD data when a clip is played out of a channel of the same
aspect ratio. Previously a clip had to play out of a channel of the
opposite aspect ratio in order for AFD data to be affected. Support for
this is provided inside NXOS using the AFD Override check box and via
the protocol interface.
Options have been added to the NEXIO AMP support for AFD data so
that customers can better choose how to make use of the AFD:
The ability to select between the SMPTE 2016 and ATSC TSG-814
interpretations of AFD.
An option to strip off all AFD data on play out so as not to affect
any down stream devices.
An option to force the generation of AFD data even when other
clip and channel properties are configured to insert new AFD
data.

What is an ID? An ID is a unique identification number for your individual media content.
42 Chapter 3
Ingesting and Storing Clips
Adding a New The Add ID function is used to create new IDs for recordings. This does not

User Guide
Be sure to also enter the desired loop duration, or you will create an open
ended ID, which will not have sliding characteristics.
The prefix used to define a sliding ID is definable. The prefix LOOP used
above is the default setting, but it can be set to anything. For example,
you could set it up so that any ID that starts with the ”# “ character is a
sliding ID. The prefix is set in the following registry path:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ASC AUDIO
VIDEO\LLM\Control\DefaultSlidingPrefix.
Sliding ID for Delay Create a sliding ID on one channel and set it to record. Load the same ID
Applications into another channel and set it into playback. You are now seeing a
delayed program from the playback channel. Position the playback
channel at any location in the loop to achieve the desired amount of delay.
This delayed playback continues until it is manually stopped.
54 Chapter 3
Ingesting and Storing Clips
Sliding ID and When you create a subclip from a sliding ID, the material contained in the
Subclips for Live subclip is not discarded by the sliding mechanism. For example, you start
Event Capture the recording of a sliding ID with a 30 minute duration. Within that ID, a
subclip is defined to include the segment from 3 minutes to 5 minutes into
Applications the recording. Even if the sliding ID is left recording for days, the subclip
contains its original recorded material.
As subclips are unaffected by the sliding process, you can use them to
save parts of a live feed without having to save every frame of material.
This is especially valuable for capturing news events and for use in sports
highlight applications.
For example, you can create a sliding ID on one channel and set it into
record. Load the same ID into another channel and set it into playback.
You can play through the sliding ID on the second channel while stopping
to create subclips as needed.
Auto ID The Auto ID increment function is available for live situations where you
must create many IDs (or subclips) on the fly. When Auto ID increment is
Increment on, clicking the Add ID, Digitize, or Subclip buttons brings up the data
entry windows with the ID field already filled in with a unique text string.

Trim
The Trim function is used to trim unwanted frames from the beginning
and end (head and tail) of a clip or subclip.
When you trim a parent clip or a single clip, the trim process is permanent.
The unwanted frames are deleted from the server. When you trim a
subclip, the pointers to the original frames on the parent clip are moved
— not deleted.
When the Trim Mode is selected, the Trim button will be highlighted red,
as shown below.
With the clip enabled for trimming, shuttle or jog the clip to the desired
inpoint or outpoint, and then Mark the point. Depending on the selected
point, the Mark In, Mark Out, or Duration field appears red as shown

If you do not want to trim the clip, you have several options:
Subclip
A subclip is a portion of an existing ID (parent clip) with its own MediaBase
entry. A subclip is defined by pointers that reference frames on the parent
clip, and thus, no additional media is stored on the server. You can make
subclips from parent clips or other subclips.

SDTI
When the channel is set to DV, enable the SDTI check box to ingest an
SDTI stream and automatically convert it to DV format. An SDTI source
(such as an SDTI compatible tape deck) is required.
An SDTI stream can only be ingested when the server channel is set to DV.
Contact your System Administrator for assistance with channel format.
Channels Menu The Channels menu lets you set a variety of Channel Control window
options.
Auto ID Options
The Auto ID Options menu determines how subclips are named.
The Auto Subclip menu setting can be accessed from the Channels
menu. It is directly reliant on the AutoIDIncrement menu. If
AutoIDIncrement is turned off, the Auto SubClip (AllChannels) menu
will be disabled. The "\" key initiates this feature. Every channel is
checked to see if connected and if an ID is loaded. It then sets the
Mark In and Mark Out points based on the MarkIn/MarkOut offsets. A
subclip is then created similar to the codec dependant Auto SubClip
feature.
NEXIO™ NXOS 81

The automatic ID is based on two factors: the original clip name and
the current ID length. To change the ID length, select the ID Length =

User Guide
TapeBase The TapeBase window provides a convenient way for users to re-digitize
material that has been removed from the server. Typically, with limited
Window room on the RAIDset, a facility will delete clips that have reached their kill
dates to make room for new material. The masters will then be stored in a
tape vault. If an old clip is needed again, the TapeBase knows the original
tape’s location in the vault, along with the clip’s original marks.
To re-digitize the clip, locate it in the TapeBase, locate the physical tape in
the vault, load it in the tape deck, and double-click the desired TapeBase
entry. The original marks are recalled to the Digitize window — click
Digitize to load it back to the server.
Columns are provided for ID, Description, Duration, Source In, Agency,
Type, Kill Date, Tape #, Store Room, and Bin (every field in the associated
Digitize window).
The Status field indicates the clip’s status in relation to the RAIDset
(for example, Offline or Online).
To sort the TapeBase by any column heading (such as ID or Kill Date)
click the desired heading. Clicking again changes the sort order from
ascending () to descending () order.
Double-click any line to recall that data to the Digitize window,
letting you digitize the selected tape segment.

Creating Subclips
Creating Subclips On The Fly
Trimming Clips Use the Trim Mode feature to remove unwanted frames at the beginning
or end of a clip. It is important for your on air look that IDs contain only
the frames you want to display. Most external controllers (including the
video server PlayList) play clips from beginning to end.
Trim Mode permanently deletes specified frames from a clip. The disk
space that was used to store these frames is available for future use. The
new start point and duration of a trimmed clip is immediately recognized
by the video server.
You can toggle Trim Mode on or off in the channel window, as shown in
Figure 5-79.

Creating Subclips A subclip is a portion of an existing (or parent) clip with its own unique ID
name in MediaBase. A subclip created on one video server is immediately
available for use by all other video servers on the system.
Subclips are stored as pointers to a section of the original parent clip. You
can create an unlimited number of subclips from a single parent clip. You
can also create subclips from subclips. These subclips have the original
parent clip.
To create a subclip
1 Load an ID into a channel window.
2 Enter the desired timecode or use the transport control buttons to find the
desired first frame of the subclip to be created.
3 Click Mark above the Inpoint register.
Enter the desired timecode or use the transport control buttons to find the
desired last frame of the subclip to be created.
6 Enter the subclip ID. (Note: You can only enter a Subclip to create a unique
ID if AutoID is not turned on.)
7 (Optional) Enter a description.
8 Enter the kill date or use the default kill date (06/07/00).
9 Click OK.
In the above example, we are creating a subclip ID named
“SampleSubClip”, based on the Parent ID 1099edlfilecop, with an In time
of 1:14:30;25 and an Out time of 1:14:30;26, and a total clip length of 1
second.
Below is the view of the MediaBase window after the subclip is created:

Creating Subclips You can create subclips “on the fly” from clips that are currently
On The Fly recording. This includes looped clips. By default, the subclip uses the Mark
In, Mark Out, and ID length values currently set for your clips. (For more
information, see Channels Menu on page 79.)
You can use this feature to instantly capture highlights in a clip. For
example, you can use this to instantly capture a sports highlight subclip.
You must have the channel window recording the parent clip selected to
create automatic sublips.

Some of the Video ARC options also let you customize horizontal (H) and
vertical (V) size as well as H and V cropping.
If the Video Info field in MediaBase is blank on a specific clip, Video ARC
settings cannot be used for that clip. Only the default setting can be used.
Currently the Video Info field is not populated for clips created on a

populated for material transferred as a file from an external source where
the information is not specified by the transfer mechanism.
When transferring a file via FTP from an external source, Down Conversion
is possible but only to the default value. There is no support for Video ARC
for items transferred from an external source. The same is true if the
Video Info field in MediaBase is blank. (No Video ARC, Up and Down
Conversions only to default value.)

When using the Change Metadata\Video ARC menu item against more
than one clip, NXOS must first check the aspect ratio of every selected clip
to ensure that all of them have the same aspect ratio. If even one clip has
an aspect ratio different from the rest, NXOS displays a dialog indicating
that the selection includes clips with different aspect ratios (see
Figure 5-84).
When you select one of the aspect ratios, the appropriate Video ARC
selection dialog displays for those clips. All non-matching clips will not be
affected by the change.

Player
Overview NEXIO™ Delay is an application in NXOS that lets you create a delay for
your play-to-air content. You can specify the program ID, target delay
times, and additional buffers for delay manipulation. Once the parameters
are set and the record mode is selected, Delay automatically outputs the
delayed video after the countdown timer has expired.
To start Delay
In NXOS, choose View > Delay Window.
OR
Use the Delay icon (stopwatch) on the NXOS Toolbar, as shown in
Figure 7-91.
130 Chapter 7
Delay
This check box is disabled if the codec is play only or if 2 recorders are
already selected.
Once a recorder is selected, the ID, Duration, and Extra Buffer values
can be entered as described below:
The text color changes to white and the background color to red, as
shown above in Figure 7-93. This is an indication that the codec is
currently recording. If at any time the recording stops, the timecode
changes to its original colors.
The server will automatically begin outputting the delayed video once the
delay countdown timer has expired.
The delay record is exactly what the record channel is configured for. For
example, if the CH3 is DV50, then the Delay Rec will be DV50. The same is
true for all channels being used for Record.

5 Highlight the desired file and click Open.
The selected file will be imported, and the associated spots will appear in
the PlayList or NEXIO PlayList window — with the list ready to run.
If you start this entire procedure with a “saved” PlayList (whether or not
you append), the newly imported spots will reside in the saved PlayList’s
file. Thus, if you save the PlayList, it overwrites the previously saved
PlayList.

folder that contains the traffic file, then click Open to load the
file into the Traffic File Content section of the screen. The file’s

8 Click Next to display the Traffic Wizard Filter Statement screen,
which is used to create filter statements.
A traffic filter ”statement“ is a set of instructions that are used to filter out
certain types of data within a traffic file, (such as the event ID, duration,
label, EOS, etc.). Each statement contains an ”identifier“ plus pointers to
the exact column location and length of the specified data.
The identifier is a ”flag“ that tells the filter that the required data appears
in that line. Identifiers must be in the same column of the text file at all
times.
For example:
When the filter locates an ”x“ at column position 116, it will try to
extract ”Target“ information from that line.
302 Chapter 15
Traffic Functions
When the filter locates a ”b“ at position 73, it will try to extract ”ID“
information from that line.

16 Try out the new filter by importing a traffic file. Refer to the Importing
a Traffic File section for more information.
If you want to test out the filter, be sure to set it as the default filter file.
Filter Statement Please note the following important points regarding filter statements:
Notes
Different sets of screens are used for the various filter statements,
(such as ID, Target, EOS, etc.). However, using the Wizard as a guide,
the method of scrolling through the file and designating the
appropriate text remains the same.
As an alternate method, you can enter a value directly in a field,
rather than highlighting text. For example, when asked to highlight
the start and end of the ID field, place your cursor at the start of the
field (to indicate the Start Position), then type 32 in the Length
field. (PlayList supports 32-character IDs.)
The Description field is not required, but the system allows you to
filter a description if desired by assigning its Start Position and
Length. (PlayList supports 255-character descriptions.) If you opt to
skip a field that is not required, simply click Next to continue through
the wizard screens.
NEXIO™ NXOS 307
User Guide
When you have a complete filter file and you perform the ”import“
function, the system performs the following task:

”found @ position“.

each designated ”extract @ position,“ for each designated
length.
Repeats the procedure for each line and each identifier.

”Admin“or ”delete“ privileges.
File
