Difference between

(1) Measurement,

(2) Protection and

(3)Condition Monitoring
Electrical measurements are the methods, devices and
calculations used to measure electrical quantities.

Measurement of electrical quantities may be done to measure

electrical parameters of a system.
Using transducers, physical properties such as temperature,
pressure, flow, force, and many others can be converted into
electrical signals, which can then be conveniently measured and
recorded.

Electrical measurements are a branch of the science of metrology.

Protection is a branch of electrical power
engineering that deals with the protection of
electrical power systems from faults through the
disconnection of faulted parts from the rest of
the electrical network.

The objective of a protection scheme is to keep the power system

stable by isolating only the components that are under fault,
whilst leaving as much of the network as possible still in operation.
Thus, protection schemes must apply a very practical and
pessimistic (gloomy) approach to clearing system faults.

The devices that are used to protect the power systems from
faults are called protection devices
Condition monitoring is a process of continuously monitoring
operational characteristics of a machine to predict the need for
maintenance before a deterioration or breakdown occurs.
Condition monitoring is the use of advanced technologies to
determine the condition of equipment and predict its
failure. This in turn should inform predictive maintenance
(PM) or reliability-centred maintenance (RCM).
Condition monitoring is valuable maintenance that can be
typically carried out while the equipment is running. Through
periodic measurement we can observe trends. This allows
overhauls to be planned well in advance to prevent failures of
electrical equipments.
Condition monitoring is the process of monitoring a
parameter of condition in machinery, such that a significant
change is indicative of a developing failure.
Condition monitoring is a major component of Predictive
Maintenance (PdM). The use of conditional monitoring allows
maintenance to be scheduled, or other actions to be taken to
avoid the consequences of failure, before the failure occurs

Catastrophic Failure
A catastrophic failure is a sudden and
total failure from which recovery is
impossible. Catastrophic failures often lead to
cascading systems failure.

Catastrophic Failure

A catastrophic failure is a sudden and total failure from which

recovery is impossible. Catastrophic failures often lead to
cascading systems failure.
The term Catastrophic failure is most commonly used for
structural failures, but has often been extended to many
other disciplines in which total and irrecoverable loss occurs.
A catastrophic failure, defined as one that results in the
outage of a sizable amount of load, may be caused by
dynamic instabilities in the system or exhaustion of the
reserves in transmission due to a sequence of line tripping
leading to voltage collapse.
Necessity of Condition Monitoring
1. A potential failure is an identifiable condition that
indicates that a functional failure is either about to occur
or is in the process of occurring
Necessity of Condition Monitoring

2.Real function of monitoring must always be to attempt

to recognize the development of faults at an early stage.
3.Improved plant or equipment efficiency
Necessity of Condition Monitoring

4. Reduced capitalized losses due to breakdown.

5. Reduced replacement costs

6. Better safety
Amount to be spent on Condition
Monitoring
Is a Condition Monitoring System Expensive?

Condition Monitoring Systems Are An Investment ?

This depends on the value of the process in which the

machine works, and estimates vary, but they are never less
than 1 per cent of the capital value of the plant being
monitored.
