LECTURE 1: CHRONIC, LIFESTYLE-RELATED, AND

NONCOMMUNICABLE DISEASE

What are the common types of lifestyle-related Noncommunicable Diseases (NCDs)?

A cardiovascular disease is an illness or disorder that affects the heart and blood
vessels. The heart (cardio) and blood vessel (vascular) disease are described together;
whatever affects one affects the other. This is because the cardiovascular system is a
closed system, with the heart as the pump and the vessels as a network of flexible tubing
throughout the body.

1. Stroke – is a condition caused by the sudden interference of blood flow

throughout the brain, rupture of the wall of an artery in the brain brought about
by high blood pressure, and when there is a formation of blood clot in the
arteries of the brain this is usually results in a loss of brain function. Without the
oxygen and nutrients carried by the blood, the brain cells die.

Best way to prevent stroke:

 eat a healthy diet
 exercise regularly
 avoid smoking
 avoid drinking to much alcohol

2. High blood pressure – is the force that is made by blood pushing against the
walls of the arteries and veins within the body. The heart creates this pressure as
it pumps blood. Each time the heart beats; it pushes blood out into the arteries,
which then carry the blood to every part of the body.

Causes of high blood pressure

 obesity
 heredity
 stress
 smoking.

3. Arteriosclerosis or “hardening of the arteries” – is a condition on which the

arteries become hard and stiff.

Hypertension is a major factor in the development of arteriosclerosis.

Another factor in the development of arteriosclerosis
 diabetes
 overeating especially of eggs, butter, cream, and fatty foods
 infectious diseases
 overweight
 excessive nerve stress

4. Heart attack – is usually caused by coronary heart disease. Coronary heart

disease refers to a blockage of the coronary arteries-those arteries supplying the
tissue of the heart with blood. The blockage may be due to fatty deposits or a
blood clot. Heart attack strikes suddenly whether a person is resting, eating and
even sleeping.

determines how vulnerable are you to the damaging effects of sunlight.

Suggestions to prevent skin cancer

or more.
 Examine the skin regularly. This includes examinations by a health care
professional and self-examinations.

until the disease is quite advanced.
