COURSE DESCRIPTION:

An introduction to the nature, causes, and possible interventions of psychological


disorders. The students are expected to be familiar with the nomenclature and
classifications of mental disorders, by the end of the course. Indigenous concepts of
abnormality and abnormal behavior will also be discussed. Ethical considerations in
abnormal psychology/clinical psychology are discussed.

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES:

At the end of the course, students are expected to:

1. Describe the clinical pictures of the different mental disorders.


2. Explain the basis and causes of the various mental disorders.
3. Understand the possible prevention and treatment of these disorders.
4. Compare and differentiate normal form to abnormal behavior.
5. Appreciate the importance of alleviating the condition of people suffering from
these disorders.
6. Identify and define the descriptive characteristics of psychological disorders in the
DSM-V.
7. Evaluate the modern researches in the diagnosis and treatment of psychological
disorders.
8. Discuss the historical development of the different theories involved in
understanding these conditions.
9. Explain the commonly manifested conditions of the different psychological
disorders.
10. Analyze the appropriateness of each intervention program for various types of
psychological conditions.
