Survey of Canadian-Romanians: A Socio-Demographic Portrait, 2010

• Method: 15-min on-line survey (www.chestionar.ca; www.romaniancanadian.ca/survey )
• Data collection: mid September – November 2010.
• Sample: N=425*; convenience, non-probability sample. English-speaking Romanians who
use the Internet. Data is unweighted.
• Romanian-Canadian: for the purposes of this study, it was defined as a person:
• who currently lives in Canada and
• was born in Romania or Romanian is their first language.
• Sample sources:
• Email referrals
• Internet forums (quebec.ro, romaniana.net, romanians.bc.ca, romaniincanada.org,
etc.)
• Social Networking & Blogs (Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter, Blogs, etc.)
• Romanian-Canadian printed newspaper announcements (e.g. Acasa Toronto, Accent
Montreal, Pagini Romanesti, etc.)
•Announcements posted by other organizations (e.g. Romanian Embassy at Ottawa,
Romanian Cultural Association of Canada, Liga Studentilor Romani din Strainatate, etc.)

Note: Many of the survey questions were adapted after the Longitudinal Study of Immigrants to Canada (LSIC) and
other Statistics Canada surveys. The study aims to follow MRIA’s best practices for public opinion research.
*For a randomly selected sample the margin of error for N=425 is 4.8% at a 95% confidence interval. Our sample is a
convenience sample – which is the case with most surveys conducted on-line – therefore reporting the margin of error is
meaningless.

superiore vor fii bine primite aici cu atit mai bine vei succeda in noile studi superiore si vei succesa in viitor.
examenele in Romania.

Do your homework before coming here. It is very different from Romania. For some, it is hard to adapt, to start from zero with education/professional credentials. Canada is
much bigger in all the senses from Romania, and you will be much smaller in consequence, and cut off from your usual network. But don't automatically join the Romanian
diaspora and invest all your time/energy/money there - this will only impede your adaptation to Canada. It's important to maintain your cultural links, but you must also get out
of your comfort zone in order to reap all the benefits of your move here.Good luck!

I use to say Canada is not for everyone. So, before deciding to take the step check yourself in the mirror and reflect: are you willing to know WHO you really are?? If so,
Canada maybe for you. I say it worth it!
I wish you happiness wherever you are!
I'M HAPPY I LEFT!
if u really want to live stress free, u should move to Canada
If you are young enough and have prospects, try to immigrate.
If you chose to live in Romania, try to help it to survive.
If you enjoy living there, than stay there, if you don't, then do something about it.
If you have any oportunity don't hesitate to emigrate in Canada
If you like too much Romania stay there.
If you plan to move here, come for a prolonged visit first! No, money don't grow on trees here!
if you realy feel like traped in a bad limbo, then come to Canada
If you want to move to another country, be prepared for the unknown, no matter how much information you have. Research and inform yourselves. It's just life - you would face
changes and challenges in any country on this planet, even in Romania.
trai in propria lor tara. Trist.
Immigrate in Canada only if you have nothing to loose in Romania.
In Canada nu umbla caini cu covrigi in coada.
Information gives you power and continuous education enable you to conquer the world. It's one's choice where to live and what to believe in.
is better to live in Canada than Romania. My message is : come here if is possible. Canada apriciates the roumanians. There are here:
doctors,engineers,avocates,teachers...they work in theyr field !
Is mandatory
Is nice to live in Canada,I like a lot.
It is not easy to be successful in Canada, not easy at all. It takes a lot of energy, hard work and sacrifice.
it is their choise

To be very responsible and brave to life in an instable economy situation. To have better politicians and better law.
to came here
to respect the laws is a must
To respect themselves and each other, to start thinking at their children's future, making from Romania a better place for them. Provide important values that can be the base
for an healthy and normal life.
To work better for living better.Always.
to work harder, to study, stop stealing, stop corruption, vote change

Try to be more active.
Try to be positive, human, more tolerant, loving and involved.
Try to live better.
Veniti aici
Viata si-o face frumoasa omul insusi. In Canada acest lucru e mai simplu.
Voi sunteţi urmaşii Romei?…
wake up and work hard

Wake up!
We had the courage to change and move forward, do the same and stop stealing
We have an extraordinary culture and people! Do not let the current economic/political situation and those of the past demoralize you. Stay strong and the country will regain
strength :)
We need to better understand our civic power and to exercise it in order to improve our general condition.
We're waiting for you!

:) nice one. good luck with it
a bit intrusive towards the end; otherwise, just fine.
A good idea
A mers
a verry good idea to know about how we live in Canada!
Almost complete.
An excellent survey, congrats.
Aproape bun
As vrea sa am rezultalele sondajului.Merci!
Bad english !
BE TOUGH!
Bravo pentru initiativa !
bun, intrebari deschise, buna reprezentativitate demografica a grupelor de varsta...congrats
chestionarul in romana, franceza unde este?
Clear and easy to read.
Considering the purpose, nicely done.
cool :)
Cu cine facem ASOCIATIA TUTUROR ROMANILOR DIN CANADA? Dreptate avea nea Iancu Caragiale.
Excelentall romanians from diasora should take it
Excellent survey! The fact that the Romanian Consulate (only 5 Km away) never asked me any of these questions speaks volumes.
few things: - it would be intersting to look at how many mixed marriages (common law)- some questions might not be relevent for folks that came to Canada in their teens, or, just after
university- I would love to see the results of the survey
Foarte interesant si bine venit.
Foarte la obiect.

Great hope helps to understand the Romanian comunity
great idea!
Great job. Will see the results.
Great questions.
Habar n-am cui o folosi.
hope is useful
Hope it's useful
Hope you'll achieve your goal of having enough respondents for your study.
How will this help for a better romanian comunity in Canada?
I appreciate this action
I believe this study will be biased as it has not been addressed to all the Romanians but only to those used to computers, opened enough to fill out a survery and able to speak English. That
been said, will only reflect the top of the emigration, but not the true reality of who/what the Romanian-Canadians are in thier new home. Thnak you anyway for your effort ... "decat nica, a
buna si Anica" ar zice o vorba romaneasca. Scrie-mi ceva sa public la revista noastra de Manitoba Bafta si multumiri. CS
I did it to help others. Maybe one day we wll be more united.
I found it a bit long but very interesting. Hope to see the results soon.
I hope it will be usefull.
I hope most of Romanian-Canadians wouldparticipate in this survey !
I liked it. Hope it's useful.
I suggest a question about what would make me return to Romania: highways and/or TGVs railways across the country, less bureaucracy in dealing with authorities, lots of corrupt people in
prison - Prosperity will come naturally with that. Hope you can pass the message. Thanks a lot.
I think i'ts pointles
I trust the reason behind this survey and all my consideration for the person who made it possible. Despite the queer atmosphere on the quebec.ro forum, with so many people, suspiciously
very happy, trying to blast away every shadow of misfortune, adversity or purely different thinking and different ways to get through life, I would say this inquiry has a good chance to make
people speak the truth. It is very nicely done, there is no bullying and no need to embellish things because everything remains anonymous and confidential. Right? I'm joking :) A wonderful
day to you, Alex or the team who created this prospect and I can wait to see the results and the conclusion.
I would have loved to know more about the purpose of this study. I've completed the survey just because I got the reference from a good friend.
I would like to know the results of the survey. Hope that will get published somehow.
I would like to see the French version of this survey. I think you will reach many people living in Quebec who are much more familiar to answer in French. Overall it was a great idea, congrats !
I would like to see the research report based on this study. It is very impressive and a noble cause.
I would love to see the results posted on the facebook page
Illuminating!
I'm happy that someone fights for the Romanian community in Canada
Interesting
Interesting , would like to know more about the results .
interesting survey...

It does not cover all life situations.
it is OK
it is OK, I guess
it was pretty interesting!
It's a very good idea.
it's interesting and I'm looking forward for its final results
it's ok.
keep going
lenghty
Life in Canada changes for an immigrant. It's hard at the beginning, but then it gets better.
merci et bonne chance
My particular situation may have been misrepresented by my answers due to the lack of more precise questions: I am a part-time student (I will finish my BA in a few months; I receive the
Bourse and Loan from the federal gouv. but I also work part-time; and so on).Good luck with the survey
Needs some improvements.Eg. someone who get two same level degrees in both countries(Romania and Canada), has no option to check both.
O idee excelenta!
ok
OK
On few occasions the answer choices provided do not apply/cover everyone - but that’s expected in such a general survey. Another comment: people who emigrated young won’t be able to
state if their experience was better, same or worse than the one in Romania since they never experienced that society from the perspective of employment and providing for themselves. My
personal experience was "totally different than expected" but not better, nor worse and in the answer choices there was no option to reflect that. On your side, it would be helpful to tell
people bit more about what motivated you to launch this survey. Overall it was an ok experience but honestly I was tempted not to participate in it at first due to lack of info on its subsequent
use. Thanks and best of luck!
Pertinent questions. It remains the selection bias.
Please send this survey to as many as possible romanians - there are many who would fill it out but doesn't know about its existance!!!! Would be very interesting to see the final results - the
many respond the better the more accurate the results are.Bafta!!!!
Poor.
Prea lung!
Profesionist.
quite good, professional grade. it's about time to take a look at the romanian-canadian community. Congrats.
really accurate.
See previous note
Slow server.
Some answers could not fit into the survey (... have visited Romania ... I never did it since landed in BC, so had not this option = "never" or living in a house/condominium owned or rented
dwell.. I pay a discounted rent and I have some extra rights of using rooms in the building, as Manager; to me is not the same meaning of paying rent and is not an option to say "not available
(living with friend, relatives..)".For the income section I thing would be appropriate to specify for the individual income ranking: not the household income or to switch between question; for
a family responsible member (mother or father) the first answer will be related to the whole family concerns and duties...Anyway, is good to know is somebody connecting our lives in such a
manner deserving full respect!Thank you and good luck!

Sophisticatedly crafted! Well done! I would say it also opens entrepreneurial windows, good luck…

Subtire...
SUPER
Thank you
Thank you for the idea.
Thank you!
Thank you.
Thanks for asking.
The one-question-per-page format made it really slow.
The question "After you arrived to Canada, how quickly did you find your first job?" could have another answer: "went back to school". Finding a job after more that an year because of the
scolarship is not equivalent to being unemployed.
There are questions that should have the option "Not Applicable" as some questions may be miss-represented if the individual answering the question cannot identify with any of the answers
provided (i.e. is your work situation better in Canada than in Romania. Considering that some may have moved here prior to being employed in Romania). Cheers!

Wonderful! Thanks!
would be interesting to see results
Yeah, why in English? Romanian is nice, you know...
Yes, it is remarcable that it is done however maybe it had to be a bit more granular. Regardless I took the survey in the appreciation of the fact that somebody is doing it. Hope Romanians find
a community bone and also, the so called profesional Romanians are really profesional with their fellow Romanians. I used to look for Romanian businesses to renovate my house. They were
overcharging and being unserious (most of them) so I still try to buy Romanian but I am far less commited to.
You didn't ask whether we are truly spiritually happy in Canada?
You have no mention where and/or when the results will be made public.
you're missing certain situations, but I think in general you'll be capturing the essential of what you're looking for
