Teacher’s Name: Mr.

ORISHEJE MATTHEW Subject: Mathematics

Class: Year 8 Date:31052021
Number of Students: 5 Duration:45 mins
Week: 7 lesson 1 Average Age: 12+
Topic Position and movement
Sub-Topic Coordinates and enlargement
Learning Objectives By the end of the lesson students should be able to:
(i) Understand and use the language and notation associated with
enlargement; enlarge 2D shapes, given a centre of enlargement
and a positive integer scale factor.
(ii) Interpret and make simple scale drawings.
Learning Intention Learners should know that scale factors tell you how the lengths of the shape
change and also how far from the center of enlargement the image is
Success Criteria Students should be able to enlarge a shape.
Instructional/ i. Smart flipchart
Learning Materials ii. Coordinate square sheets
iii. Graph papers.
Reference Materials Coursebook p158-163, Ex. 16.1 -2

Vocabulary Coordinate, Transform, object, image, reflect, translate, rotate, enlargement,
combination of transformations, scale factor, centre of enlargement.

Previous Knowledge Students are used to cartesian plane.

Introduction/ Teacher brings large squared coordinate paper to the class a plays
Starter coordinate game with students.

Step 1 Teacher guides students to discuss Student explains what he
(5minutes) the meaning of object and image observes.
The shape before any transformation is
called the object. The shape after the
transformation is the image. You need a
mirror line to reflect a shape.

Step 2 Teacher guides students to translate

(10Min.) object.

When you translate a shape you move it a

given distance, right or left and up or down

Step 3 Students discuss the meaning of Student explores mirror

(10Min.) mirror line equation. line equation
Evaluation(10 Teacher guides student to apply the Student solves sample

Differentiation Teacher identifies the students that

didn’t fully understand the concept
and assists them.
Conclusion Student is given exercises to solve:

TOPIC: POSITION AND MOVEMENT

✦Exercise 16.1
Question 1 .

Copy each diagram. Add the mirror line with the given equation. Reflect the shape in the mirror line.

Question 2 Copy each diagram. Use the translation you are given to draw the image of the object.

Question 3 Copy each diagram. Use the information you are given to rotate the shape.

ASSIGNMENT : Exercise 16.1 : Question 4 and 5 page 160 Maths Coursebook.

4 The diagram shows triangle A. Make three copies of the diagram. Draw the image of A after each
combination of transformations. Use a different copy of the diagram for each part.

a) a translation 4 squares right and 1 square down followed by a reflection in the line y = 3
b) a rotation of 90 ° anticlockwise, centre (3, 5) followed by a translation 3 squares right and 2
squares down
c) a reflection in the line x = 4 followed by a rotation of 180 °, centre (6, 4).

5 The diagram shows five triangles, A to E. Here are four transformations.

a ) a translation 3 right and 1 down followed by a reflection in the line y = 3 

b) a reflection in the line x = 4 followed by a reflection in the line y = 2 
c) a rotation 90 ° anticlockwise, centre (4, 5) followed by a translation 2 left and 2 down 
d) a reflection in the line y = 4 followed by a rotation 90 ° anticlockwise, centre (7, 6) Work out which
triangle is transformed to which other triangle by each of the transformations.
