What is the Internet of Things

The term “Internet of Things” was coined by Kevin Aston,

technology pioneer and former executive director of MIT’s Auto-ID
Center in 1999.
The Internet of Things (IoT) is a scenario in which objects, animals
or people are provided with unique identifiers and the ability to
transfer data over a network without requiring human-to-human or
human-to-computer interaction. IoT has evolved from the
convergence of wireless technologies, micro-electromechanical
systems (MEMS) and the Internet.
IoT?
Cisco, AT&T, GE, Intel,
ARM, IBM, Microsoft,
Google and Facebook
are pouring millions
into IoT projects.
Why we need the IoT?

IoT Applications and Proposed Benefits
1- IoT will create new jobs for people around the world.
2- IoT can reduce the traffic accidents by connecting the cars and the streets to smart sensors.
3- Airplanes can operate more efficiently, lowering your ticket price.
4- We can have our packages delivered with DRONES, saving time and money.
5- Interconnected farm equipment is optimizing food production.
6- Your house can now be smart and connected.
7- There are even connected floating hotels for workers drilling offshore! These hotels use built in sensors to
monitor each vessel and run preventative diagnostics in real time.
8- By the end of the decade, some cities will inter-connect their infrastructure to provide electric vehicle
charging stations, smart grids and meters, smart taxis and parking, and a Direct Alarm System for homes.
9- connected healthcare equipment can monitor you at all times.
10- A Dutch company is using wireless sensors on cattle to identify when animals are sick or pregnant.
That is all ok, BUT!
What are the expected problems of the IoT?
1- security: hackers, viruses, malfunctioning.

2- privacy: your data will be in the open for the companies (Big data is the money behind the IoT).

3- Digital Fatigue: as we will be more and more digitally connected and fed up.

4- Ecosystems: and the war among big and small companies to control the market.

5- No Killer App: IoT do not have that kind of advertisement, yet!

6- Enterprises Will Mess Things Up: smooth transition to the IoT can be really hard for small enterprises.

7- Who will control the IoT, The vendors or the consumers?

Questions:
1- What do you think about the IoT?
2- Will you use the IoT in your home? Work? Or daily life?
3- Do you think that the suggested problems are solvable or not?
