Avoiding heat damage
Pre-Work
Use this workbook as a guide to build a strong foundation
for a heat services

Step 1: Shampoo first with a deep cleansing shampoo designed

to cleanse the hair and scalp of debris.

Step 2: Cleanse your tresses with a shampoo designed to add

moisture to your strands.. This will aid in maintaining the
moisture balance needed to avoid heat damage.

Step 3: Depending on whether your hair texture is coarse, fine or

medium determines the conditioner needed.

Note: Be careful here don't overdue it in the amount of

conditioner you use. To much conditioner could cause
your flat iron results to be off.

Step 4: Blow dry thoroughly

(At times the scalp area is harder to get dry focus a little more
time in this area.)

Flat Ironing Tips

1. Plug in your flat irons in a dry area, free of

clutter.
2. Once your flat iron is heated, test it by placing
the corner of a white towel between the flat
irons, hold it there for at least 10 to 20 secs.
Look at the appearance of your towel. If the
towel is discolored brown it is indication your
irons are too hot.
3. Prior to putting the irons in your hair. Look at
your irons see the opening between it, the
partings you choose to flat iron needs to be
equal to the diameter of your irons when
closed. Flat ironing huge sections can cause the
heat to not be evenly distributed. Causing heat
damage

4. Never assume the temperature needed for your

tresses. But rather do a strand test prior to determine the
temperature setting needed.

5. Part hair into four sections making it easier to

maneuver depending on the density of your hair.

6. Pin each section with hair clamps.

7. After you have secured each section, take a section in

the nape area and slice thin piece of hair with a rat tail
comb.
8. Use this section to do your heat test.
9. Use the analysis to determine whether or not higher
level is needed.
