MICROBIOLOGY & PARASITOLOGY ACTIVITIES FOR THE BSN STUDENTS
Activity No. 3
MICRO-PARA LABORATORY EQUIPMENT

NAME OF STUDENT: BUSTALIÑO, JILL CABASAG SECTION: OREM

Instruction: Directly paste/or encode your answer after the given question. IN CAPITAL BLUE LETTERS.

Introduction:

Familiarization with the different laboratory equipment and their uses is important to aid the students in
the performance of the different laboratory exercises. This will provide them with the confidence necessary in
doing the various activities in the laboratory.

Objectives:
At the end of this activity, the student shall have:
1. identified the different equipment and apparatuses used in microbiology and parasitology laboratory
2. described the functions and uses of each equipment and apparatus
3. illustrated the different materials and equipment used in microbiology laboratory

TASKS TO COMPLETE:

Illustrate and indicate the use(s) of the following equipment and apparatuses. Use the table below for your
answers.

Drawing Use(s)
PETRI DISH PETRI DISH IS ONE OF THE MOST COMMONLY
USED EQUIPMENT IN THE LABORATORY,
ESPECIALLY IN THE FIELD OF BIOLOGY. THE
DISH IS USED TO CULTURE CELLS BY PROVIDING
STORAGE SPACE AND PREVENTING THEM FROM
GETTING CONTAMINATED. THE TRANSPARENCY
OF THE DISH MAKES IT EASY FOR THE
MICROORGANISM TO BE SEEN CLEARLY, AND
OBSERVE ITS GROWTH STAGES. THE SIZE OF
THE PETRI DISH ENABLES IT TO BE KEPT UNDER
THE MICROSCOPE DIRECTLY FOR OBSERVATION
WITHOUT THE NEED TO TRANSFER IT ONTO A
MICROSCOPIC PLATE.
INOCULATING LOOP
THE INOCULATING LOOP IS USED IN THE
CULTIVATION OF MICROBES AND
TRANSFERRING OF MICROSCOPIC
ORGANISMS ON PLATES FOR STREAKING.

INOCULATING NEEDLE INOCULATION NEEDLE IS USED IN THE

TRANSFER OF MICROBIAL ORGANISMS
FROM PLATE CULTURE TO NEEDLE BY
FIRST STERILIZING THE NEEDLE TO
PREVENT CONTAMINANTS. THE LID OF THE
AGAR PLATE CULTURE IS THEN REMOVED
TO ALLOW THE NEEDLE ACCESS TO THE
MICROORGANISMS CULTURED ON THE
AGAR PLATE.
