Occupational Health & Safety

• Occupational health and safety is the broad field of study and practice in which
professionals from a variety of disciplines work together to protect and enhance
the health, safety and well being of employees and visitors of the organization.
• “Occupational safety and health is identified as the discipline dealing with the
prevention of work-related injuries and diseases as well as the protection and
promotion of the health of workers. It aims at the improvement of working
conditions and environment.”

• If you are still dissatisfied with safety issues, give suggestions to top
management.
Obligations of TVET Institution on OHS
• Create a safe work environment
• Develop system and procedure to allow work safely
• Develop communication system to inform any hazards
• Conduct monitoring, supervision and evaluation
• Provide appropriate protective equipment, tools and clothing
• Train students/trainees on appropriate OHS competencies
Conclusions!

• OHS is very important to maintain HR and institution


• If HR becomes healthy and safe, organization remains healthy and safe
• Maintaining OHS based work environment is image of the organization
• TVET institute has to perform both maintaining OHS working environment
and equipping students with OHS competencies
• Therefore, OHS is one of the key performance indicators of the organization
• There should be OHS management system
What TVET Institute Should Do?

• Develop OHS manual/guideline based on OHS Laws


• Integrate OHS competencies in the curricula
• Establish OHS department/Unit
• Train/recruit professional staff
• Develop OHS system
