Most of the basic formatting can be done easily by clicking on various tabs on the ribbon at the top of

the document.

Page numbers

On the Insert tab, click the on Page Number and it should provide you with options. The number will
appear in the place you select. If you need to format the numbering differently, choose Format Page
Number on the drop down menu of Page Number. A new window should open with options such as
different first page, different format of numbers, whether to include chapter numbers in the page
number, and you can also choose the number to start from. If you want to change the font size or style,
click the header and change them as you would change the regular text in the document. The change is
applied throughout.

Section breaks

They help you customize the formats for different sections based on content and purpose. For example,
they are really useful if you want one page to be landscape in a portrait document (when you need to
insert tables for instance) or if the text in the header or page number format needs to be different for
different pages.

To insert a section break, click the Page Layout tab and choose a Breaks option in the Page Setup group.

Next Page starts a new section on the next page. If you do not want a page break, choose Continuous
which starts the new section on the same page. Even Page starts the new section on the next even-
numbered page and Odd Page starts the new section on the next odd-numbered page.

To format the page numbering for different sections:

1. Click between two parts of your document that you want to number differently.

2. On the Page Layout Tab, click Breaks and pick the kind of section break you want.

3. Click in the first section of your document.

4. On the Insert tab click Header and then click Edit Header.

5. On the Header & Footer Tools tab click Page Number and choose the option you want.

6. On the Header & Footer Tools tab click Page Number again and choose Format Page Numbers

7. In the Number Format group, click the format you want for the numbers in this section.

8. If you want the page number for the first page in this section to start at a particular number
other than the first number in the format series, click Start at under Page numbering, and then
enter the first number that you want to appear on the first page of the section; OR if you want
the page numbering to continue from the previous section, click Continue from previous
section and click OK

9. To change the page numbering in other sections, on the Header & Footer Tools group,
click Next in the Navigation Group and repeat the steps above.
For formatting headings, subheadings, and other text, the Styles group in Home tab is useful. You could
always change and customize the style to your liking manually as well.

For indentation, use the ruler tool at the top of the page just below the formatting ribbon. You can
manually place and space the tabs by adjusting and selecting the tab markers. For instance, a left
justified tab marker will align your text by justifying it to the left margin. These can be manipulated for
first line indent or hanging indents (in references, for example).

When you need to quickly copy and format texts to make them match other parts of the document, use
the Format Painter (the paint brush icon) in the Clipboard group in Home tab.

You can insert headers and/or footers in the document either by clicking the Header & Footer group in
the Insert tab or by double clicking the top or bottom margins and typing the text there.
