April 14, 2021

Total: 12 marks

Determine from the above figure,

1. The maximum and minimum principal stresses at points A and B

2. The maximum shear stresses at points A and B

Solutions:

The shear stress at points A and B is:

τA/B = Shear Load/ Resisting area = 20kN/(πd2/4) N/mm2

= [(20 × 103) × 4 ] / π(60)2 = 7.07 N/mm2 1 mark

The bending stress at points A and B is:

σb(A/B) = Mb/Z ; Z = I/y , but y = 0 at points A&B. Therefore,

= Mb/0 = 0 N/mm2 1 mark

Torsional shear stress at point A is:

τt,A = (Ttwist × r) / J = [Ttwist × (d/2)] /( πd4/32)

= 16Ttwist /πd3 = [16 × (20 × 103 × 50)] / π(60)3 = 23.58 N/mm2 1 mark
Torsional shear stress at point B is:

τt,B = (Ttwist × r) / J = [Ttwist × (d/2)] /( πd4/32)

= 16Ttwist /πd3 = [16 × (20 × 103 × 110)] / π(60)3 = 51.87 N/mm2 1 mark

The maximum and minimum principal stresses, and maximum shear stress at A, are:

Total shear stress at point A, τA = τA + τt,A = 7.07 + 23.58 = 30.65 N/mm2 1 mark

σA(max) = 0.5[σb(A) + √[((σb(A))2 + 4τA2)] = 0.5[0 + √(02 + 4 × 30.652)]

= 0.5[0 + 61.13]
= 30.65 N/mm2 (Tensile) 1 mark

σA(min) = 0.5[σb(A) - √[((σb(A))2 + 4τA2)] = 0.5[0 - √(02 + 4 × 30.652)]

= 0.5[0 - 61.13]
= - 30.65 N/mm2 (Compressive) 1 mark

τA(max) = 0.5√[((σb(A))2 + 4τA2)] = 0.5√(02 + 4 × 30.652)

= 30.65 N/mm2 1 mark

The maximum and minimum principal stresses, and maximum shear stress at B, are:

Total shear stress at point A, τA = τB + τt,B = 7.07 + 51.87 = 58.94 N/mm2 1 mark

σB(max) = 0.5[σb(B) + √[((σb(B))2 + 4τB2)] = 0.5[0 + √(02 + 4 × 58.942)]

= 0.5[0 + 117.88]
= 58.94 N/mm2 (Tensile) 1 mark

σB(min) = 0.5[σb(B) - √[((σb(B))2 + 4τB2)] = 0.5[0 - √(02 + 4 × 58.942)]

= 0.5[0 - 117.88]
= - 58.94 N/mm2 (Compressive) 1 mark

τB(min) = 0.5√[((σb(B))2 + 4τB2)] = 0.5√(02 + 4 × 58.942)

= 58.94 N/mm2 1 mark
