OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH

Occupational Safety and Health is a cross-disciplinary area

concerned with protecting the safety, health and welfare of people
engaged in work or employment. As a secondary effect, it may also protect
co-workers, family members, employers, customers, suppliers nearby
communities, and other members of the public who are affected by the
workplace environment.

As defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) "occupational

health is concerned with all aspects of health and safety in the workplace and
has a strong focus on primary prevention of hazards." Health has been defined
as "a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely
a lack of disease or infirmity."
Occupational health is a multidisciplinary field of health care that is
concerned with enabling individuals to carry out their work in a way that
causes the least harm to their health. It contrasts, for example, with the
promotion of health and safety at work, which seeks to prevent harm from
any incidental hazards arising at the workplace.

Workplace - office, premises or worksite where a worker is temporary

or habitually assigned.

Hazard - particular place, thing, or situation that is a risk or danger to

the person involved.

Occupational Health should aim to:

1. Promote and maintain the highest degree of physical, mental and social
well being of workers in all occupations;

2. Place and maintain the worker in an environment suitable to his

physiological and psychological capabilities;

3. Protect workers from risk resulting from factors adverse to health; and

4. Prevent workers from resignation due to health caused by poor working

conditions.

The reasons for establishing good occupational safety and health

standards are frequently identified as:

Moral - an employee should not have to risk injury at work, nor should
others associated with the work environment.

https:// bit.ly/306GJSz
Economic - many governments realize that poor occupation and health per
result in cost to the State (e.g. through social security payments to the
incapacitated, costs for medical treatment, and the loss of the “employability”
of the worker). Economic studies human welfare in terms of the production,
distribution, and consumption of goods and services.

https://bit.ly/306JbIL

Legal - Occupational safety and health requirements may be reinforced in

civil law and/or criminal law.

https:// bit.ly/2C81pS7

Safety Standards are standards designed to ensure the safety of

products, activities or processes and others.
