Stimulator
A stimulator consists of two electrodes (a cathode and an
anode).
Generally a handheld stimulator has a fixed distance
between the two electrodes.
When stimulating, in most cases the cathode (black or
negative pole) is placed toward the direction in which the
nerve is to be stimulated.
Conduction gel should be used to ensure electrical contact.
This may need to be reapplied periodically.

antidromic studies.
Important Points to Remember:
Proximal and distal stimulation have similar
waveforms in morphology and duration.
More than 20% decrease in amplitude with the
proximal stimulation (compared to the distal
amplitude) indicate a conduction block across the
segment.
Estimate axonal loss by compare the amplitude of
the CMAP on the unaffected side.
When stimulating the ulnar nerve, the elbow should
be bent to 70–90 degrees.
With motor nerves, a distance of at least 10 cm
between stimulation points.
