EXAMPLE 1.

10 At point in a stressed material, the Cartesian stress components are:

σx = -50 MPa; σy= 40 MPa; σz= 20 MPa.

τxy= τyx = -25 MPa ; τyz = τzy = 10 MPa ; τzx= τxz = -5 MPa . Calculate the normal, shear and

resultant stresses on a plane whose normal makes an angle of 62° with the x axis and 35°

with the y axis.

SOLUTION: Here, α = 62°, β= 35° which give us l= cos 62° = 0.47, m = cos 35º = 0.82.

We know that (l2 + m² + n2 = 1), which gives us n = 0.33

Applying Cauchy's law,

[ ][ = ][] *

= [ ][ ]*

= [
Then Resultant stress ,-,

= 53.22 MPa

The normal component σn, is given as:

σn,= l σrx + m σry+ n σrz:

= 0.47 x (-45.65) + 0.82 (24.37) + 0.33 x (12.45)

= 2.64 MPa
Thus, Shear stress τn=

= 53.15 MPa
