ACTIVITY SHEET #8: Parallel Structure - Clause

GEAR UP
MELC: Use parallel structures (word level)

After the learners have finished answering this activity sheet, they will be able to:
1. distinguish clauses used to construct parallelism in sentences;
2. identify the correct parallel structure in a series of clauses;
3. construct sentences using correct parallelism.

ENGAGE
PARALLEL STRUCTURE – CLAUSE
Clauses can also be used to make parallel structures. In this case, remember that you must use full clause
structure (subject + verb + objects) and that the subjects of BOTH clauses will be the same. This causes the
verb conjugation to remain the same in both clauses.
There mainly two types of clauses:
1. Independent Clause – a group of words with a subject and verb.
Example: “We make a living by what we get; we make a life by what we give.” — Winston Churchill
* Please note that to have a parallel structure in two clauses, both should be constructed in the same way.

2. Dependent Clause – a group of words that cannot stand by itself.

Kinds of Dependent Clause:
A. Noun Clause – The noun clause is a clause that functions like a noun in the sentence. Remember that
a noun names a person, place, thing, or idea. Nouns can function as subjects, direct objects, indirect
objects, object of the preposition, and predicate nominatives.
Example: She said that she was having fun but not that she was meeting people.
B. Adjective Clause – An adjective clause, also known as a relative clause, is a type of dependent clause
that works to describe a noun in a sentence. It functions as an adjective even though it is made up of a
group of words instead of just one word. In the case of an adjective clause, all the words work together to
modify the noun or pronoun. The structure of Noun Clause can be:
- relative pronoun (who, that, which, whom, whose) + subject + verb
- relative pronoun (who, that, which, whom, whose) + verb
Example: She is a woman who is intelligent and, at the same time, who seems distracted.
C. Adverbial Clause – An adverb clause is a group of words that function as an adverb in a sentence. The
clause can modify or describe verbs, adverbs, and adjectives. In general, adverb clauses add information
that elaborates on when, where, why, how, how much or under what condition the action in the sentence
takes place.
Example: As he didn't understand and because he refused to try, they let him go.
