mill on the creek beyond the school play-
ground. Today, as then, the creek bears his
name. Norton Creek is an offshoot of the
Huron River.

...and much more! City Award, Wixom is one of the fastest
growing cities in Oakland County. Lo-
cated in the midst of the rapidly develop-
ing I-96 corridor, Wixom is less than 30
minutes from the Detroit Metropolitan
Airport, and approximately 35 minutes
from Detroit and Ann Arbor.

The establishment of Wixom as a place

started in the early 1870s when the Holly,
Wayne and Monroe Railroad was con-
structed through the area. Willard Wixom
platted land on either side of the railroad
near the Novi and Commerce Township
border. The construction of a railroad de-
pot and the naming of the area as Wixom
fixed it as a destination.

The city employs a balanced approach
to land use development with a mix of
high-quality residential living and a strong
diverse industrial base. Wixom has the
seventh-lowest tax rate in the state in its
population class, has the fourth-lowest
combined water and sewer rates in Oak-
land County and boasts of one of the fin-
est school districts in the state.
 Wixom Habitat
Parks & Nature
Wixom is home to seven parks, including
the Habitat park.
Wixom Habitat Park is a 292 acre nature
preserve located at Wixom and Potter
Roads and is home to a variety of fauna,
flora and wildlife. This environmentally
sensitive area is protected from the loss
of wetlands occurring in other parts of
the area. Phase I has been completed
with a grant from the DNR and includes
800 feet of boardwalk and 2,685 feet of
walking paths, a viewing platform at East
Gallager Lake, and a paved parking lot
with 26 spaces connecting to the citywide
bike path. Future plans include additional
trails, viewing platforms and an interac-
tive nature education center.

Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were
13,263 people, 5,889 households, and
3,150 families residing in the city. The
population density was 1,420.0 per square
mile. There were 6,086 housing units at an
average density of 651.6/sq mi. The racial
makeup of the city was 90.40% White,
2.50% African American, 0.51% Native
American, 2.85% Asian, 0.04% Pacific
Islander, 1.55% from other races, and
2.14% from two or more races. Hispanic
or Latino of any race were 3.20% of the
population.
There were 5,889 households out of which
30.9% had children under the age of 18
living with them, 41.8% were married
couples living together, 8.0% had a female
householder with no husband present,
and 46.5% were non-families. 37.4% of all

households were made up of individuals
and 4.1% had someone living alone who
was 65 years of age or older. The average
household size was 2.24 and the average
family size was 3.07.
Annual Activities
Throughout the year Wixom hosts com-
munity events such as the Farmer’s Mar-
ket, Founder’s Festival, Wixom Showcase,
the Fall Fest/Panther Hunt, Summer
Concert Series, Easter Egg Hunt, Annual
Wine Tasting, Movie Night in the Park,
Bi-Annual Circus and many more.
Business & Industry
Wixom is home to many production and
manufacturing businesses, including Triji-
con, a leading manufacturer of telescopic
Ford GT Manufactured in Wixom
sights; Discraft, a leading manufacturer of
flying discs for disc sports games like Ulti-
mate; the U.S. headquarters of spark plug
manufacturer NGK, and MAC Valves,
Inc., a manufacturer of pneumatic valves
used in the automotive industries.
The city was home to the former Wixom
Assembly Plant, which produced the Lin-
coln LS, the Ford Thunderbird, the Ford
GT, and the Lincoln Town Car. The plant
closed its doors on May 31, 2007.
Companies such as Adept Plastic Finish-
ing, J&B Medical Supplies, American Su-
zuki, Detroit Public TV, GM Performance
Build Center, Honda R&D Americas, Met-
rologic Group Services, NxtGen Emission
Controls, National Time & Signal, Rock-
well Medical Technologies, and Takao
America, all have a presence in Wixom.
