Hot Work Tool Steels
Is used for medium and large-sized dies, due to its remarkable hardenability. It is supplied in the annealed condition so that it may be easily engraved before quenching and tempering. After quenching and tempering, it has a very high level of toughness. This steel is self-hardening and high resistance values are achieved, even with air cooling. This characteristic is very useful when deformations have to be avoided (dies for plastic moulds). For large-sized parts, when good mechanical test results are required, even at significant depths, quenching is carried out either in polymer or oil. Tempering must be carried out immediately after this operation. A pause at 680-700 °C is recommended during heating for hardening, to uniform the temperature, before heating to 880 °C, follone by cooling in forced air, oil or polymer or baths at 480 °C. It is used for punch tools, hot-work rollers and hot-forming dies.
