HEAT
QUESTION / ANSWERS

NEERAJ GUPTA 1
SHORT Q/A

NEERAJ GUPTA 2
Q1
EFFECTS OF HEAT
1. Change in temperature of an object : When the
body is heated, the temperature rises and when it is cooled,
the temperature falls.
2. Change Of State Of A Substance : The change
of a substance from one physical state to another is
called its change of state.
3. Change In Dimensions Of An Object : When a
body is heated, it expands and when it is cooled, it
contracts.

Q2
1. Melting : The process by which a solid changes into
the liquid state at a constant temperature by
absorption of heat is called as fusion or melting
2. Boiling : The process by which a liquid changes into
the vapour state at a constant temperature by
absorption of heat is called as vaporization or
boiling
3. Sublimation : The process in which a solid directly
converts into the gaseous state at all temperatures is
called as sublimation.
4. Evaporation : The process in which a substance
changes its state from liquid to vapour state at all
temperature is called as evaporation.

Q3
While filling the medicine bottles , appropriate
space is left in them , this is done to allow the
liquid medicines to expand when they sent to
hot countries.

Q4
The materials that allow heat to pass through
them easily are called as good conductors of
heat.
Example: Aluminium, iron, copper, silver, etc.
The materials that does not allow heat to pass
through them are called as bad conductors of
heat or insulators.
Example: Plastic, wood, glass, rubber, etc.

NEERAJ GUPTA 6
Q5
Cooking vessels are made of metals like copper
and steel because they are good conductors of
heat and they allow heat to easily pass through
them.

LONG Q/A

NEERAJ GUPTA 8
Q1 (a)
• Sagging of telephone and electric wires -
This is done to prevent them from breaking
due to tightness when they contract during the
winter season

NEERAJ GUPTA 9
Q1 (b)
• Construction of bridge : One end of the
girders is fixed in the thick cemented concrete
pillar. The other end is left free and placed on
rollers. Due to any rise or fall in temperature ,
the girders Roll over the rollers without
damaging the supporting pillars.

NEERAJ GUPTA 10
Q1 (c)
• A small gap is left between the iron rails of
railway tracks : During summer , these rails
expand and fill the gap . If no gap between the
rails , they may bend due to expansion. This
may result in train accidents.

NEERAJ GUPTA 11
Q1 (d)
• Fitting the iron or steel rim on a wheel : The
iron ring to be put on the rim of a cart wheel is
always of slightly smaller diameter than that of
the wheel. When the iron ring is heated to
become red hot, it expands and slips on to the
wheel easily. When it is cooled, it contracts
and grips the wheel firmly.

Q2
The flow of heat from a body at a higher temperature to a body
at a lower temperature is known as transfer of heat.
The fundamental modes of heat transfer are :
Conduction : It is the process by which heat is transferred from
the hotter end of the object to the colder end of the object.
 It takes place mainly in solid objects, and occurs only when
two materials are in contact.
Convection : It is the transfer of heat by the movement of
particles of a medium from one place to another.
 It occurs only in liquids and gases.
Radiation : It is the transfer of heat that does not require a
medium. All hot bodies emit NEERAJ

by the process of radiation. 13
Q3
Land breeze : It blows during the night from land to sea
and the land becomes cooler faster than the sea.
 The air above the sea becomes less dense (i.e. warmer)
and rises. The cooler air from the land moves in to take
its place.
Sea breeze : It blows during the day and the land heats
up faster than the sea.
 The air on the land becomes less dense (i.e. warmer)
and rises. The cooler air over the sea which is denser
(i.e. cooler) flows in to take the place of the warm air,
causing a sea breeze.

Q1
Between 20⁰ C to 50 ⁰ C as heat transfer from
water at 50 ⁰ C to water at 20 ⁰ C so, after some
time a intermediate temperature is reached and
after that temperature no flow of heat takes
place.

Q2
Wearing more layers of clothing keeps more
amount air to be trapped inside the layers, since
air is poor conductor of heat and it does not
allow the body heat to pass through the other
layers whereas , in single layer less amount of air
will be there so heat transfer will be more as
compared to multiple layer of clothing.
