PROPER WASTE MANAGEMENT AT HOME, IN SCHOOL AND IN COMMUNITY

Background Information:
Solid waste management is the collecting, treating and disposing of solid
materials that is thrown away because it has served its purpose or is no longer useful.
Improper disposal of solid wastes can create unsanitary conditions, that leads to
pollution of the environment and to outbreaks of borne diseases-diseases spread by
rodents and insects.
The sources of solid waste include school, residential, commercial, and
industrial activities. Waste that cause immediate danger to exposed persons or
environments are classified as hazardous.
All nonhazardous solid waste from a community that requires collections and
transport to a processing or disposal site is called REFUSE or Municipal Solid Waste.
Refuse includes garbage and rubbish. Garbage is mostly decomposable food waste.
Rubbish is mostly dry material such as glass, paper, cloth or wood. Garbage is highly
decomposable whereas rubbish is not.
The school defined solid waste as thrown away food waste and its plastic, paper
or other materials used for packing. In a community, the waste generated by a
population is primarily a function of the people’s consumption patterns and, of their
socio economics characteristic.
Waste management is important in cleanliness and sustainability drive, that
future generations have a functional and inhabitable planet to live on. And that they
get to experience clean air and healthy lives. This is one of many reasons why
managing our waste, choosing to recycle and up cycling are all important.
Waste management includes the activities and actions required to manage from
its origin to its final disposal. This activity includes collection, transport, treatment and
disposal of waste, together with monitoring and regulation of the waste management
process.

Biodegradable and Non-Biodegradable
Identifying the commodities and separating the garbage according to the
biodegradable and non-biodegradable label is very important in proper waste disposal
and its management.
Non-Biodegradable is referred to all materials which cannot be broken down or
decomposed into the soil by natural agents are labeled as non-biodegradable. It can
be recycled and used again. Plastics, metals, and bottles can be broken down with the
help of chemicals and be used again to create new plastic and metal products.

Biodegradable is referred to all those things that can be easily decomposed by

natural agents. Natural agents include water, oxygen, ultraviolet rays of the sun, acid
rains, microorganisms, etc. On the other hand, non-biodegradable substances are
never broken down or decomposed by environmental factor.

Waste management is important for building sustainable and livable

community. This emphasizes the need for people to recycle their waste. Why is
recycling important? Improper waste disposal and the increasing amount of
trash/garbage produced are one of the major problems faced by people not only in our
community but also in the whole world. Problems on improper waste disposal have
caused other problems such as clogged drainage or canals, flooding and diseases.
We can help the environment, keep in mind the three R’s: reduce, reuse and
recycle. By doing these three things, we can cut down the garbage that we throw away.
3
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
We can help our mother earth to cut down garbage by keeping in mind the three
“R’s”: reduce, reuse, and recycle.
One of the easiest things we can do is to reduce or lower the number of things
we throw away. For example, avoid disposable items, use reusable containers.
Reuse is the practice of using a material repeatedly in its current form
Recycling is using a material to make new product. It is an easy way to protect our
environment and ensure the well-being of our community for generations to come. The
success of recycling depends on the active participation of every member of the
community. By participating, people will be reducing the amount of trash that is
disposed in the landfill, encouraging the reuse of materials made from recycled
products and continuing the recycling circle
Example of Reduce Example of Reusable Example of recyclable

Stop buying stuff Glass jars, containers, cans Metal cans

Bring your own bag Newspapers, magazines, cardboard

Segregation of Waste
Waste segregation" means dividing waste into dry and wet. Dry waste includes
wood and related products, metals and glass. Wet waste typically refers to organic
waste usually generated by eating establishments and are heavy due to dampness.
Waste production cannot be controlled in a community. By proper segregation and
disposing of the waste, we can reduce the amount of toxins entering the atmosphere.
It is easy to reduce all types of waste materials by changing your habits and you can
even make some savings during the process. Here are the steps in the segregation of
waste:
1. Determine whether it is solid, liquid or gas waste.
2. Determine if it is hazardous waste. These are the waste that are characterized as
toxic, corrosive, and flammable substances. The hazardous waste is usually stored
underground.
3. Metals and other materials that do not burn easily are place in a drum.

Reflection

Now it’s time for you to be a land pollution detective. Look around your house.
Observe if there are piles of uncollected garbage. If there are, are they biodegradable
or non-biodegradable? Where do you put them to? Are they properly segregated?
What are their effects on your home? What can you do to improve the garbage
disposal situation in your home?
