Mole Concept
Rizalyn S. Santos
Every day you do tasks that require counting and measuring. You count the
money that you spent for a day. You measure the amount of water needed to cook
rice. You count the number of items that you got correct in a test. Other people
like a cook, a doctor, an engineer, and a scientist do measurements. Measurement
is important to chemists. For chemists to prepare a chemical needed for the
industrial process, they would need to know the right proportion to use in mixing
the substances for the chemical reaction. To do this, the chemist should measure
the exact number of atoms or molecules of the substances. Chemists have devised
a way to count such particles with the unit of mole.
After going through this module, you are expected to use the mole concept
to express the mass of substances. S9MT-IIi-19

B. Mass is a significant quantity for different people. Bakers need to measure
the mass of the ingredients they need to bake. Market vendors measure the
mass of the things they are selling. Measuring the mass of reactants is
needed for chemists when performing chemical reactions. Do the activity to
know more about the mass of substances.
Use the periodic table of elements to determine the atomic mass or atomic weight
of the elements given in the table.

Study the following examples on how to compute the molecular mass or formula
mass of compounds.
Step 3: Determine the atomic mass of each element using the periodic
table. Round it off to the nearest whole number.
Chemical No. of Atomic Mass (rounded
Element
Symbol atoms off to the whole number)
Hydrogen H 2 1
Oxygen O 1 16

Magnesium Mg 1 24 24
Oxygen O 2 16 32
Hydrogen H 2 1 2
Formula Mass of Magnesium Hydroxide 58 g
To solve, multiply 3 to 6.02 then, copy the base and the exponent. Cancel the same
units in the equation.
You can only cancel the same units when one is in the numerator
and the other is in the denominator. You will need to recall your
lesson on scientific notation. Always place the decimal point of the
coefficient after the first significant figure.
Another example, how many moles are present in 2.408 x 1024 molecules of water?
To solve, make the exponents the same by moving the decimal one time to the
right. 2.408 x 1024 24.08 x 1023. Divide 24.08 by 6.02 and cancel the base and
the exponents.
1 𝑚𝑜𝑙 𝐻2𝑂
24.08 x 1023 molecules H2O(6.02 𝑥 1023 𝑚𝑜𝑙𝑒𝑐𝑢𝑙𝑒𝑠 𝐻2𝑂) = 4 mol H2O
Molar mass is the substance’s mass in one mole. The molar mass of
elements is equivalent to its atomic mass. For compounds, the molar mass is
equivalent to its molecular mass or formula mass. Since the mole of the substance
is related to its mass, molar mass contains 6.02 x 1023 particles.
The relationship shown above means that the molar mass of 12C is 12 grams per
mole (g/mol). Twelve grams of 12C contains 6.02 x 1023 atoms.
The particles of matter are very tiny. You cannot count atoms or molecules
manually. Inside the laboratory, the quantity that you can easily measure is the
mass of the substance. You can get the mass of a sample using the balance. The
molar mass can be used to convert the given mass to the number of particles.
Step 3: Proceed with the calculation and cancel the same units.
Since the numerator is one, the process will be division. Divide 300 by 60. So,
the answer is five.
1 𝑚𝑜𝑙 CH3COOH
300 g CH3COOH ( 60 𝑔 CH3COOH ) = 5 mol CH3COOH
To convert the mass of the substance to its number of particles, you are
going to combine the lessons on mass to mole conversion and mole to several
particles conversion. Consider the example below.
