What I Need to Know

Every day you do tasks that require counting and measuring. You count the
money that you spent for a day. You measure the amount of water needed to cook
rice. You count the number of items that you got correct in a test. Other people
like a cook, a doctor, an engineer, and a scientist do measurements. Measurement
is important to chemists. For chemists to prepare a chemical needed for the
industrial process, they would need to know the right proportion to use in mixing
the substances for the chemical reaction. To do this, the chemist should measure
the exact number of atoms or molecules of the substances. Chemists have devised
a way to count such particles with the unit of mole.

This module contains one lesson: Mass and Mole

After going through this module, you are expected to use the mole concept
to express the mass of substances. S9MT-IIi-19

Specifically, you should be able to:

 differentiate the molecular unit from the formula unit and compute for
the molecular mass.
 define mole and calculate the number of moles of given compounds.
 compute for the number of particles given the mass or number of
moles.
 convert the number of moles, mass, and number of particles from one
unknown to another.

Molecular Mass and Formula Mass
Compounds like water and table salt are measured in terms of molecular
mass and formula mass. The sum of the atomic masses of each atom in the
molecule is called its molecular mass. The sum of the atoms in one formula unit
is called formula mass.

Study the following examples on how to compute the molecular mass or formula
mass of compounds.

Sample Problem No. 1

What is the molecular mass of water?
Step 1: Write the chemical formula of the compound.
Water H 2O
Step 2: Identify and count the number of atoms for each element.
REMEMBER: Subscripts represent the number of atoms of an
element. When there is no subscript written, it is understood that
the element has only one atom in the formula.

Step 3: Determine the atomic mass of each element using the periodic
table. Round it off to the nearest whole number.

Mole is the amount of substance that contains the same

number of atoms as 12.00 grams of Carbon-12 (12C). A mole
contains 6.02 x 1023 particles called Avogadro’s number,
named after an Italian chemist Amedeo Avogadro.

1 mol 12C= 6.02 x1023 atoms 12C= 12.00 g 12C

How about changing the number of moles of the substance?

For example, how many atoms are present in 2 moles of 12C?

2 mol 12C = _______ atoms 12C

City of Good Character 8

DISCIPLINE • GOOD TASTE • EXCELLENCE
6.02 𝑥 1023 𝑎𝑡𝑜𝑚𝑠 12C
3 mol 12C(
1 𝑚𝑜𝑙 12C
) = 18. 06 x 1023 atoms 12C  1.806 x 1024 atoms 12C

To solve, multiply 3 to 6.02 then, copy the base and the exponent. Cancel the same
units in the equation.

You can only cancel the same units when one is in the numerator
and the other is in the denominator. You will need to recall your
lesson on scientific notation. Always place the decimal point of the
coefficient after the first significant figure.

Another example, how many moles are present in 2.408 x 1024 molecules of water?

2.408 x 1024 molecules H2O = _______ mol H2O

To solve, make the exponents the same by moving the decimal one time to the
right. 2.408 x 1024  24.08 x 1023. Divide 24.08 by 6.02 and cancel the base and
the exponents.

1 𝑚𝑜𝑙 𝐻2𝑂
24.08 x 1023 molecules H2O(6.02 𝑥 1023 𝑚𝑜𝑙𝑒𝑐𝑢𝑙𝑒𝑠 𝐻2𝑂) = 4 mol H2O

Molar mass is the substance’s mass in one mole. The molar mass of
elements is equivalent to its atomic mass. For compounds, the molar mass is
equivalent to its molecular mass or formula mass. Since the mole of the substance
is related to its mass, molar mass contains 6.02 x 1023 particles.

1 mol 12C = 6.02 x1023 atoms 12C = 12.00 g 12C

The relationship shown above means that the molar mass of 12C is 12 grams per
mole (g/mol). Twelve grams of 12C contains 6.02 x 1023 atoms.

The steps in computing for the molar mass of compounds is the

same as the steps in molecular mass or formula mass calculations.
The unit for molar mass is not the same as molecular and formula
mass.

The particles of matter are very tiny. You cannot count atoms or molecules
manually. Inside the laboratory, the quantity that you can easily measure is the
mass of the substance. You can get the mass of a sample using the balance. The
molar mass can be used to convert the given mass to the number of particles.

Mass to Mole Conversion

To convert the mass of a given sample of the substance to mole, divide it

into the mol mass. Consider the equation below.
1 𝑚𝑜𝑙
given mass in grams (𝑚𝑎𝑠𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑠𝑢𝑏𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒 𝑖𝑛 𝑔𝑟𝑎𝑚𝑠) = required mol

Study the following examples on mass to mole conversion.

1. A sample of acetic acid (CH3COOH) was measured 300 g. How many moles
are there in this compound?
Step 1: Compute the molar mass.
Atomic Mass
Total Mass

number)
Carbon C 2 12 24
Hydrogen H 4 1 4
Oxygen O 2 16 32
Molar Mass 60 g/mol

Step 2: Use the molar as a conversion factor (multiplier).

1 𝑚𝑜𝑙 CH3COOH
300 g CH3COOH ( 60 𝑔 CH3COOH ) = ? mol

Step 3: Proceed with the calculation and cancel the same units.
Since the numerator is one, the process will be division. Divide 300 by 60. So,
the answer is five.
1 𝑚𝑜𝑙 CH3COOH
300 g CH3COOH ( 60 𝑔 CH3COOH ) = 5 mol CH3COOH

2. Calculate the number of moles in 270 g of water.

The molecular mass of water as computed in lesson 1 is 18 g. So, the molar
mass of water is 18 g/mol.
1 𝑚𝑜𝑙 H2O
270 g H2O ( 18 𝑔 H2O ) = 15 mol H2O

Mole to Mass Conversion

To convert the number of moles of a given substance to grams, multiply it to
the molar mass. Consider the equation below.

𝑚𝑎𝑠𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑠𝑢𝑠𝑏𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒

given mol ( 1 𝑚𝑜𝑙

Mass to Number Particle Relationship

To convert the mass of the substance to its number of particles, you are
going to combine the lessons on mass to mole conversion and mole to several
particles conversion. Consider the example below.

Sample Problem: Hydrochloric acid (HCl) commonly known as muriatic acid is

used to remove stains in the tiles of a bathroom or a swimming pool. If you have
90 g of HCl on a beaker, how many molecules of this acid are present?

Step 1: Compute the molar mass.

Step 3: Convert the computed mole to the number of particles by multiplying it

with Avogadro’s number.
6.02 𝑥 1023 𝑚𝑜𝑙𝑒𝑐𝑢𝑙𝑒𝑠 𝐻𝐶𝑙
