Job Functions

Cashier

 Answer customers' questions, and provide information on procedures or


policies.
 Bag, box, wrap, or gift-wrap merchandise, and prepare packages for
shipment.
 Compute and record totals of transactions.
 Count money in cash drawers at the beginning of shifts to ensure that
amounts are correct and that there is adequate change.
 Establish or identify prices of goods, services or admission, and tabulate
bills using calculators, cash registers, or optical price scanners.
 Greet customers entering establishments.
 Issue receipts, refunds, credits, or change due to customers.
 Issue trading stamps, and redeem food stamps and coupons.
 Maintain clean and orderly checkout areas.
 Monitor checkout stations to ensure that they have adequate cash
available and that they are staffed appropriately.
 Offer customers carry-out service at the completion of transactions.
 Process merchandise returns and exchanges.
 Receive payment by cash, check, credit cards, vouchers, or automatic
debits.
 Request information or assistance using paging systems.
 Resolve customer complaints.
 Sort, count, and wrap currency and coins.
 Weigh items sold by weight in order to determine prices.
 Accept reservations or requests for take-out orders.
 Calculate total payments received during a time period, and reconcile
this with total sales.
 Cash checks for customers.
 Compile and maintain non-monetary reports and records.
 Keep periodic balance sheets of amounts and numbers of transactions.
 Post charges against guests' or patients' accounts.
 Sell tickets and other items to customers.
 Stock shelves, and mark prices on shelves and items.
 Pay company bills by cash, vouchers, or checks.
Telephone Operator

 A telephone operator answers all incoming telephone calls in a professional and courteous
manner, and routes calls to the appropriate parties. If a caller is seeking a telephone
number, the operator looks it up in her computer or manual directory, and relays the
information. In emergency situations, she dispatches the appropriate personnel. In certain
environments, she may be required to screen each telephone call, getting the name and
relevant details from the caller, before following an established protocol. She also processes
any paperwork or records as required. As a vocal communicator, the most marketable
candidate will exude confidence and professionalism. Additionally, her grammar should be
impeccable, and she must possess a patient, courteous and affable demeanour. A
willingness to learn new technology is also important.

 Data encoding is an essential part of the modern record-keeping process, and encoders
(also referred to as data keyers) spend long hours transcribing highly confidential information for
government agencies, educational and financial institutions and private companies. Data encoders
must possess excellent computing skills and must understand how to use data management
programs and other computer softwar

Data encoders receive data in paper format, as Microsoft Office documents and as PDF files. Their
role is to transfer vital information from these forms by typing them into the required fields of a data

Personnel assistants process, verify and maintain the documentation in the human resources department. This
documentation is related to recruitment, training, performance, employee grievances, benefits, employee
classification and attendance. They also process and review job applications in order to screen applicants for specific
job openings, and forward the appropriate files to the department supervisor or contact the applicant for an initial
interview. Personnel assistants may conduct initial interviews with job applicants, notify applicants if they have a
second interview in a department, and typically follow up the interview process by notifying applicants of their
acceptance or rejection.
In addition, personnel assistants prepare badges and identification cards for new hires and answer general questions
with respect to company policy and procedures. Personnel assistants are also called upon to verify references and
check applicant information, such as an applicant's criminal background or credit history. In addition, they are
responsible for verifying employee information for authorized companies, such as credit bureaus or finance
companies.
