• KKK – Kataastaasan Kagalang-galang na Katipunan nang mga Anak

nang Bayan
• Founded by Andres Bonifacio, Valentin Diaz, Teodoro Plata, Ladislao
Diwa, Deodato Arellano, etc. in a house on Azcarraga Street, Tondo, Manila
on July 7, 1892 .

The Aims of the Katipunan

• To unite the Filipinos
• To fight for Philippine Independence

and it was divided into 3 different categories.

•Political – it was to completely separate the Philippines from Spain after declaring the country’s
independence.
•Moral – it was to teach the Filipinos good manners, cleanliness, hygiene, fine morals, and how to
guard themselves against religious fanaticism.
•Civic- it was to encourage Filipinos to help themselves and to defend the poor oppressed

This to men are considered as the twin souls of the Katipunan.

1st is Andres Bonifacio.
• Born in November 30, 1863 in a small hut at Calle Azcarraga, presently known as
Claro M. Recto Avenue in Tondo, Manila.
• One of the founders of the Katipunan, and became the Supremo in 1895 and because
of that, he is considered the "Father of the Revolution“

and the last one is Emilio Jacinto

He was born in Dec. 15, 1875 in Tondo, Manila
• He joined the Katipunan; and, at the age of 18, he became the youngest member of the katipunan
• He became a close friend of Bonifacio and He was considered the “Utak ng Katipunan”
• He was the editor of Kalayaan, the official newspaper of the Katipunan
• He was the author of Kartilla, Liwanag at Dilim, Pahayag, Ang kasalanan ni Cain, Establishment of
Government in the Court of East, and the People's Trade Association

The Katipunan also established their own Government namely:

Kataastaasang Sanggunian (Supreme Council) – which works for the whole country
– Consisted of a president, a fiscal, a secretary, a treasurer, and a comptroller.
◉ Sangguniang Bayan (Provincial Council)
– for every province.
◉ Sangguniang Balangay (Municipal Council)
– for every town.
◉ The Judicial power of KKK was exercised by the Sangguniang Hukuman
(Judicial Council)
– It decided cases involving treachery among the members and quarrels between them.

Officers of KKK
• The first Supreme Council of the Katipunan was organized in August 1, 1892. It
was composed of the following:
• President (Supremo) – Deodato Arellano
• Comptroller (Intervenor) – Andres Bonifacio
• Fiscal – Ladislao Diwa
• Secretary –Teodoro Plata
• Treasurer – Valentin Diaz

• Deodato Arellano – was the first President of Katipunan.

• Roman Basa- became the Supremo because Bonifacio was disgusted over the
performance of Arellano

• Two years after, another election was held with the following as officers:

Supremo – Andres Bonifacio

Secretary of State – Emilio Jacinto Secretary of War – Teodoro Plata
Secretary of Justice – Briccio Pantas Secretary of Interior – Aguedo del Rosario
Secretary of Finance – Enrique Pacheco

• Originally the KKK recruited new members by means of TRIANGLE SYSTEM

– An original member would recruit two new members who did not know each other.
– Example: Bonifacio formed the first triangle with Diwa and Plata
and Diwa and Plato should also recruit two new members who did not know each other
for continuing the process.
. By the end of the year, this method of recruitment was
substituted by another method which allowed the katipunero
(revolutionaries) to recruit as many members as they could
manage.
• They also agreed that they would pay a membership fee amounting to one real fuerte
(twenty-five centavos) and a monthly due of media real (twelve centavos). And as I hear
from the stories from my grandfather, twenty-five centavos or even twelve centavos are
a big money in their times.

• Every member of the Katipunan adopted a symbolic name:

Andres Bonifacio – May Pagasa
Emilio Jacinto – Pingkian
Artemio Ricarte – Vibora
Emilio Aguinaldo – Magdalo

• Three Grades of the Katipunan Membership:

There were three grades of membership within the katipunan (society): the first
grade, the second grade, and the third grade. A member of the first grade was
called a "katipon" ("associate") and wore a black hood with a triangle of white
ribbons during the meetings of the society. The letters Z. Ll. B. were inscribed
inside the white ribbons and they were the Katipunan letter codes which stood
for "anak ng bayan" ("sons of the people"), the password of the katipon. A
member of the second grade was called a "kawal" ("soldier") and wore a green
hood with a triangle of white lines during the meetings of the society. The
password for a "kawal" was Gom-Bur-Za, the first syllables of the names of
three Filipino martyrs: Gomez, Burgos and Zamora. A member of the third grade
was called a "bayani" ("patriot") and wore a red mask and sash with green
borders. The password for a "bayani" was Rizal, who was the most influential
person of the "Propaganda Movement" during this period in Philippine history.

Women of the Katipunan

- At the beginning, the Katipunan was exclusively for men.
- Women were later admitted to preserve peace in the family, because the
wives of the Katipuneros were becoming jealous of the nightly absences of
their husbands and the reduction of their monthly earnings.

Qualifications for Female Members

• Wife of a Katipunero
• Daughter of a Katipunero
• Sister of a Katipunero
• Any close relative of a Katipunero

Kartilya of the Katipunan

- Created by Emilio Jacinto, adapted from Cartilla, served as a guide for Katipunan members
and consists of 14 lessons

1. The life that is not consecrated to a lofty and reasonable purpose is a tree without a shade, if not
a poisonous weed.
2. To do good for personal gain and not for its own sake is not virtue.
3. It is rational to be charitable and love one’s fellow creature, and to adjust one’s conduct, acts
and words to what is in itself reasonable.
4. Whether our skin be black or white, we are all born equal: superiority in knowledge, wealth and
beauty are to be understood, but not superiority by nature.
5. The honorable man prefers honor to personal gain; the scoundrel, gain to honor.
6. To the honorable man, his word is sacred.
7. Do not waste thy time: wealth can be recovered but not time lost.
8. Defend the oppressed and fight the oppressor before the law or in the field.
9. The prudent man is sparing in words and faithful in keeping secrets
10. On the thorny path of life, man is the guide of woman and the children, and if the guide leads to
the precipice, those whom he guides will also go there.
11. Thou must not look upon woman as a mere plaything, but as a faithful companion who will
share with thee the penalties of life; her (physical) weakness will increase thy interest in her and
she will remind thee of the mother who bore thee and reared thee.
12. What thou dost not desire done unto thy wife, children, brothers and sisters, that do not unto the
wife, children, brothers and sisters of thy neighbor.
13. Man is not worth more because he is a king, because his nose is aquiline, and his color white,
not because he is a *priest, a servant of God, nor because of the high prerogative that he enjoys
upon earth, but he is worth most who is a man of proven and real value, who does good, keeps
his words, is worthy and honest; he who does not oppress nor consent to being oppressed, he
who loves and cherishes his fatherland, though he be born in the wilderness and know no
tongue but his own.
14. When these rules of conduct shall be known to all, the longed-for sun of Liberty shall rise
brilliant over this most unhappy portion of the globe and its rays shall diffuse everlasting joy
among the confederated brethren of the same rays, the lives of those who have gone before, the
fatigues and the well-paid sufferings will remain. If he who desires to enter (the Katipunan) has
informed himself of all this and believes he will be able to perform what will be his duties, he
may fill out the application for admission.

The Kataastaasan Kagalanggalangang Katipunan ng mga Anak ng Bayan (Highest and Most Respected
Sons of the People), otherwise known as the K.K.K. or the Katipunan, was the secret society founded
by Andres Bonifacio on July 7, 1892 at Azcarraga street (now Claro M. Recto avenue), Tondo, Manila.
The main objective of the Katipunan was to establish an independent and democratic Philippine state.
To achieve this objective, members had to be indoctrinated with the rules and ideals of the society
which were laid down by Andres Bonifacio and Emilio Jacinto, who was the "brains of the Katipunan."
Bonifacio wrote "The Duties of the Sons of the People," a Decalogue of the Katipunan while Jacinto
wrote the "Kartilla," or the primer of the Katipunan. Members were expected to follow, strictly, the
rules and to take into their hearts the ideals of the society
