Philosophy 1000: Bridging Course

Pre-Finals Application Paper: Experience of My Body

I. PHILOSOPHICAL QUESTION

The philosophical question is what is my body? Since the beginning man has
always been subdivided into two parts. Namely, the body and soul, but Moga stated
that in this notion, a lot has believed that the soul is much more important than the
body. Which in this case it should not be, because the body and soul should be
together in unity, because man functions not individually, but together, as a unified
being.
II. CONCEPTUAL ANALYSIS (PRIMARY REFLECTION)

Moga answered the Philosophical question by stating that the body is both an
object and an instrument. In this case we became aware of our own selves
and surroundings using the senses in our bodies. It signals us that it is our time
to do a certain task that requires our immediate attention. Thus, it acts like a
mirror for us to see and observe the world and even our self. On the other
hand, in order to achieve a certain task, one needs a physical body to do that,
which in this case the body becomes an instrument to do or act things for the
self.
By knowing this, we can now see how important the body is for man.
Because it is a thing that one cannot function without. It is in this that we
become aware and act accordingly depending on the situation that our body
feels and see.

III. PHENOMENOLOGICAL METHOD (SECONDARY REFLECTION)

Moga answered the Philosophical question subjectively by emphasizing that the

body is a necessity for my selfhood and also an opening to a world. He states that the
body is important and is essential in all necessary activities. One cannot show his/her
own feelings, emotions and gestures without the presence of a physical body. Thus,
without this body we cannot be a part or coexist with other people.
For the body is an opening to a world, the body plays a particular function in
our existence.  It is through this body that we live in a particular world. Then this
allows us to be immersed and a part of a world where we feel enriched that we
can actively live in.
By this we can see that the body is not merely physical, it is a whole lot
more. Thus, taking care of it is also as important as taking care with our spiritual
self.
