MIDTERM MODULE 1 ACTIVITY

Eliza Reyes and Anna Lopez were the only 2 clerks handling payments to company agents in the office of
Talavera Hypermart. They reported to the owner of the business. Reyes had been employed for 18 months and
Lopez for 14 months. Both were college graduates, about 23 years old, and single.
By manipulating the accounts in a rather ingenious way that would not normally be detected, Reyes was
stealing from account payments as they were received. During her 3 rd month of employment, Lopez learned of
Reyes’s thefts, but she did not tell to management, rationalizing that Reyes’s personal conduct was none of her
business. Lopez did not benefit from Reyes’s thefts, and the 2 women were not close friends. Their duties allowed
them to work rather independently of each other, each handling a different alphabetical portion of the accounts.
By the time the owner had learned of Reyes’s thefts through the recent installation of hidden surveillance
cameras, she had stolen approximately Php 157,000. During investigation of the thefts, the owner had learned that
Lopez had known about them for several months, because it was evident that thefts could not have occurred for an
extended period without Lopez’s knowledge. At the time of employment, both women had been instructed by the
owner that they would handle money and that strict honesty would be required of them.

Discussion Questions:

1. What disciplinary action would you recommend for each of the 2 women?
It is clear that manipulating the accounts is basically stealing. And theft in a business organization is increasingly
common and just as, if not more, is a dangerous act to a company. Manipulation of data can result in a loss of
business for may reasons, and can jeopardize a company’s operation. So stealing is a major offense and Reyes must
be punished by the most heavy disciplinary action and that is termination for committing such hedious crime and as
for Lopez he should be punish for a suspension for not saying the truth and set asiding the business ethics. Both did
not think about the consequences of their action and that is risky for both the employees and the whole company.
Everybody could have been at risk.
2. As an employee or student, is money a motivator? In a scale of 1-10, what is the degree of the importance
of money to you? Discuss your answer.
As for the purpose of telling the truth I must admit that it is a yes. And in a scale of 1 to 10 I would definitely say
that it is a perfect 10 because money plays an important role not only for us students but to very individual since this
is a basic need for a living. We study to make money in the future in order to afford what we want and that would
make us happy. We need money to survive and we are all aware that money is the fruit of all evil to both
organizations and government. Money can turn people to lose their ethical behavior and moral and forget what is
right
