RESEARCH TITTLE
THE POTENTIALS AND CONSTRAINTS OF MOTORCYCLE TRANSPORT IN
INTENSIFY RURAL MOBILITY.
BACKGROUND
Transport is an important element in development and it is affording the social, economic and
political interaction that most people take for granted (Button and Hensher 2001). Provision of
transport infrastructure has grown extensively across the globe through a range of network of
modes which have undergone technological improvements cutting across the motive power, the
tracks and the means that serve the compartment for passenger and goods. Personal mobility is
one of democracy most valued freedom and it is therefore, not surprising that a high proportion
of man’s income is devoted to the movement of goods and transactions. The importance to socio-
economic, political and cultural development of any nation is underscore by ( munby’s 1968)
statement that “there is no escape from transport”.
The increase in the use of motorcycle as a form of road transport for public in Africa is a
relatively recent phenomena. Road transport play an important role in integrating the various
sectors in any given economy in the world. This is because the transport sector makes crucial
contribution to overall economic growth and development.
RESEARCH PROBLEM
In most places of the rural areas there are transportation problems due to lack of all- weather
roads especially during rainy season, the roads are completely impassable. Due to this reasons
motorcycle have emerged to be reliable transportation for their movement in rural areas.
However, the role of motorcycle transport is not given its due weight by the local authority in
planning and development in rural community. No local authority has given priority to its
developed activities, this means of transport compared to motor vehicles. And the aim of this
study is assessing the contribution of motorcycle transport to improve mobility in rural areas.
HYPOTHESIS
-To raise easy accessibility of people from one area to another
-To reduce working distance in the community
- To improve the living standards of rural people/ community
-Motorcycle it’s very cheap compared to other motor vehicles so through this its helps to reduce
transport cost to the rural people.
OBJECTIVES.
I. To assess the role of motorcycle transport to intensify rural mobility
II. To establish the relative roles played by motorcycles transport to intensify rural mobility
III. To analyses the role of actors involved in promoting good operation environment of the
motorcycles
IV. To recommend ways to improve operational environment of motorcycles transport in
rural areas.
RESEARCH QUESTIONS
i. What is the roles of motorcycles transport in rural mobility?
ii. What are the roles of actors in promoting good operational environment of the
motorcycles?
iii. Which strategies can be done to improve operational environment of motorcycles
transport in rural?
