CHRISTIAN LIVING 6 Obeying the Commandments of God

Module 9

Proclamation of the Word of God

Moses called together all the people of Israel and said to them, “People of Israel listen to all the
laws that I am giving you today. Learn them and be sure that you obey them. At Mount Sinai the Lord our
God made a covenant, not only with our fathers, but with all of us who are living today. There on the
mountain the Lord spoke to you face to face from the fire. I stood between you and the Lord at that time
to tell you what he said because you were afraid of the fire and would not go up the mountain.
The Lord said, “I am the Lord your God, who rescued you from Egypt, where you were slaves.
Worship no good but me. Do not make for yourselves images of anything in heaven or on earth or in the
water under the earth. Do not bow down to any idol or worship it, for I am the Lord your God and I
tolerate no rivals. I bring punishment on those who hate me and on their descendants down to the third
and fourth generation. But I show my love to thousands of generations of those who love me and obey my
laws.
Do not use my name for evil purposes, for I, the Lord your God, will punish anyone who misuses my
name. Observe the Sabbath and keep it holy as I, the Lord your God, have commanded you. You have six
days in which to do your work, but the seventh day in the day of rest dedicated to me. On that day no one
is to work – neither you, your children, your slaves, your animals, nor the foreigners who live in your
country. Your slaves must rest just as you do. Remember that you were slaves in Egypt, and that I, the Lord
your God, rescued you by my great power and strength. That is why I command you to observe the
Sabbath. Respect your father and your mother, as I the Lord your God, command you, so that all may go
well with you and so that you may live a long time in the land that I am giving you.
Do not commit murder.
Do not commit adultery.
Do not steal.
Do not accuse anyone falsely.

Do not desire another man’s wife; and do not desire his house, his land, his slaves, his cattle, his
donkeys or anything else that he owns.
These are the commandments the Lord gave to all of you when you were gathered at the
mountain. When he spoke with a mighty voice form the fire and from the thick clouds, he gave these
commandments and no others. Love of God and Love of Neighbor. Then he wrote them on two stone
tablets and gave them to me.

Deuteronomy 5:1-22

Knowing our Faith

In the Old Testament:

God gave the Ten Commandments written on stone tablets to Moses on Mount Sinai. God willed
His Chosen People that they would obey His commands and always have the knowledge of the true God to
love and serve Him.
God made man in His own image and likeness. He gave him gifts of body and soul which would
enable him to know, love, and serve God. Man has intellect and free will. He has a conscience which helps
him to know by feelings of guilt.
Christ in the New Testament gave the two great commandments to love God and to love one’s
neighbor. He showed us that these two commandments fulfil the whole law. He identified Himself with our
neighbor so that we would find it easier to love. “As often as you did it to one of my least brothers, you did
it for me.” (Matt.25:40)
All authority comes from God. He is the Source of all laws and through Christ, He established His
Church. His authority is given to men. First of all, it is given to the Vicar of Christ on earth, the Holy Father,
the Pope, successor of St. Peter. Secondly, it is given to the bishops of the Church, successors of the
Apostles: likewise from them to the priests, religious, and lay people who have the authority to teach the
Sacred Doctrine of Faith. It is the Christian’s duty to know God and to learn how to live his life in
relationship with God for His greater honor and glory. This duty further obliges him to study his religion
and to conform himself to God’s will.
These two commandments of Jesus are the summary of the Ten Commandments but in a much
broader sense. They demand a loving attitude in our hearts toward God and toward our neighbour.

We show love to God by obeying His commandments. He says, “If you love me, obey the
commands I give you.” Therefore, we can only say that we love God when we also obey our neighbors as
we love ourselves. This means that we should trust others, ready to forgive them when they hurt us and be
ready to ask for forgiveness when we hurt others’ feelings or when we make fun of them. Let us also be
ready to help those who are in need and share what we have especially to the poor.

Challenges of our Faith

When God made us, He fashioned us into His own image and likeness so that we can love Him in
return. He gave us not only a body, but a soul with special powers. We can know and love God. He also
gave us a free will to choose. As His creatures, we should submit to God’s will and obey Him. He has a plan
for us, showing us how to live the Ten Commandments through Jesus, His Son, who is our brother, model,
and teacher.

The following are the Ten Commandments:

1. I am the Lord, your God; you shall not have other gods beside me.
2. You shall not take the name of the Lord, your God, in vain.
3. Remember to keep holy the Sabbath day.
4. Honor your father and your mother.
5. You shall not kill.
6. You shall not commit adultery.
7. You shall not steal.
8. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbour.
9. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife.
10. You shall not covet your neighbor’s goods.

Living our Faith

Love of God requires us to obey His Commands. Let us remind one another that we can grow in
obedience and love of God by attending Mass on Sundays and participating in the parish activities.
When things go wrong at home and in the school, we know that God will not leave us for He is
faithful and His love will last forever.
The two great commandments of God demand a loving attitude in our hearts towards God and
toward our neighbor.
