TERM MEANING
Aesthetic value The value of a landscape based on its beauty or attractiveness
Aquifer A body of permeable rock below the Earth’s surface which contains water, known as
groundwater
Biophysical environment An area dominated by natural features such as landforms and vegetation; includes the
earth’s soil, water, air and sunlight, and all living things
Conservation The development and application of management practices to conserve, protect and,
where possible, restore landscapes
Constructed environment The earth’s human-altered landscapes. It includes all those features that are normally
associated with settlements, industries and agriculture.
Country As used be Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, refers to family origins and
associations with particular parts of Australia
Dreaming A key spiritual belief of Australian Aboriginal people; describes both the period of
creation (the Dreaming) and the stories that come from this period (Dreaming stories)
Glacier A large body of ice, formed by an accumulation of snow, which flows downhill under
the pressure of its own weight
Habitat An area inhabited by a particular species of animal or plant
Landform A natural feature of the earth’s surface, for example a mountain, valley, lowland or
volcano
Megafauna Giant marsupials that once roamed the Australian continent
Multicultural Relating to several or more cultural or ethnic groups in a society
National identity A person’s sense of belonging to a nation
Permafrost A layer beneath the surface of the soil where the ground is permanently frozen
Place The human and physical characteristics of a specific location on the earth’s surface
Plateau An extensive area of flat land that is higher than the land around it. Plateaus are
sometimes referred to as tablelands.
Preservation Protection of landscapes (and environments and habitats) from loss or damage
Sacred sites Places of significant cultural and spiritual meaning to Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander people
Wilderness Extensive, largely undisturbed, areas of original habitat
World Heritage Sites Natural and cultural sites that have been identified by UNESCO as having
international significance and being worthy of protection
