Performance Task 1.
A. Compare and contrast Greek mythology with the Roman Mythology

Greek and Roman mythologies have many similarities such as having a moral lesson, and
establishing societal norms with their mythological stories. However, they also have many
differences, such as in the contexts of their histories, time periods, and the characteristics of
the gods in the stories.

One reason for their similarities is because Roman mythology was founded based on
the Greek Mythology. Greek Gods are predecessors to Roman Gods. Before, Roman gods and
goddesses were named after objects and did not possess a gender. The ancient Romans
expanded the Roman Empire across the world and when they reached Greece, they took
influence from its mythology. They used to worship thousands of gods, but they borrowed
the 12 gods of Greek mythology basing from their attributes and gave them their own
name.

As examples, King of Gods in Greek mythology is Zeus while in Roman Mythology

its Jupiter. Goddess of Marriage in Greek name is Hera and Roman name is Juno. The
God of the Sea in Greek is Poseidon and in Roman is Neptune. The Youngest son of
Uranus, Father of Zeus is Cronos in Greek, and Saturn in Roman.

Another differences and similarities of the two are shown in the table below:

Performance Task 2.
C. Choose among Greek and Roman gods and goddesses which could best describe /
characterize you. Explain your choice in3-5 reflective essay.

The Greek goddess that I think I could best describe or characterize myself with is the
goddess of Spring and the Underworld, Persephone. I think at first is because of her title as the
goddess of “spring” which would imply her as sweet and the positive correlations that goes
with it, and then the irony of making her the Queen of Underworld, which would be a
contradiction for her first title as she’s seen in a darker, deadlier shade. I think of myself as
someone having those two personalities, to sometimes be joyful and sunny as spring, and then
sometimes be grunge, dark, and angsty. And also her ability to bloom even in the darkness of
the underworld sounds appealing to me as I could relate to that with my past sad experiences
which proved that I could still be strong and shine in hard times.

Another factor is her closeness with her mother, Demetrius. I also have a protective
mother, and despite not being an only child, I could still see myself in Persephone with how
loving and clingy her mother is to her. Demeter and Persephone have an unbreakable bond,
and my mom and I have that. Meanwhile, Zeus is also like the lighter version of my father who
might have flaws and other “women” but still loves all his children the same.
I, however, oppose with how she did not get any chance to speak her mind with her
marriage. She was first kidnapped by Hades, which her father Zeus approved of, then tricked
into agreeing to stay with him when her mother, Demeter, tried to get her back. She was
oppressed and hence, unwilling to be Hades’ wife. But still, if I would get the chance to get
married with one of the other gods, I would choose Hades because he is the most faithful and
loyal husband one could ever wish for. There were also no evidences of him being a bad god to
humans or a partner, as he did not bring unfortune to humans and he did not love anyone
other than Persephone. There were stories too that after a while, Persephone learned to love
him too- as she even turned a girl who once tried to seduce Hades into a mint plant as proof of
her jealousy caused by her love for her husband.
