How is the representation of ethnicity constructed in the extract?

During the first scene open with an asynchronous sound of police sirens, this shows the
audience that before the clip has even made it obvious what is happening they already
know the police are involved. The policemen are and first characters are all white, and
these characters are the ones that hold the power and authority. We could infer that this
is because of their race. Just to get the point fully across the next shot is of the two
policemen themselves dressed in their full uniforms; this shows audience that the police
are definitely involved and may cause intrigue. The main character walks in on a medium
shot, this emphasizes his importance and power. A match cut also shows the characters
relationship building in the scene. The policemen have a lack of dialogue and those
words spoken are not pronounced properly, allowing the viewers to think they are more
likely to resort the violence. This is showing that the white police officers are likely to go
against ethnical stereotypes but play on the stereotypes created about those of the
police.

During the next scene there is a quick clip of a man from afro Caribbean ethnicity
reading a newspaper. We can infer that this shot is showing the audience that he is quite
intellectual because he is reading. It is also a medium shot and the character is sitting
down when the immigration officers walk past. The officers are standing up and it is
obvious that they have more power over the man sitting down, this placement of the
men empathizes the ethnical representation stereotypes. The ethnic minority has been
singled out here and made obvious to the audience that he has reason to be worried.
Hierarchy has been established, we can see that he must hold a job of least importance
as be is seated and every other character is standing. Further on along the scene there
is long shot that shows another black character talking to a white character on a sofa. As
the woman receptionist alerts him via secret code that the immigration officers have
arrived he gets up and leaves. This shows that he has been sent to do her dirt work and
must also hold a job that is lower down that many other characters. He may also have
been selected because of the colour of his skin, we can infer on this point later on. This
shot creates tension as the audience don’t know what to expect the immigration officer
to do; it keeps the audience on the edge of their seats. Again this character is sitting
down, but being sat with another character from a different race shows he must be hold
some respect around the hotel. As the black character exits the room he begins to run,
the music quickens and the pace is more upbeat.
