Analysis of “The 1975 Full Live Show” in London, O2

The 1975 is a rock band formed in the early 2002 and has achieved massive success in

Europe. The rock and pop band have excelled through filled up concerts due to their huge fan

base, especially in London. The 1975 full live show took place in O2, London in 2016, which

was an exciting event according to the reviews on YouTube for the performance. During the

performance of their many lists of singles, the group managed to use different elements of music,

which led to increasing interests in their performance skills.

The show began when the band was welcomed on stage as the crowd cheered at them for

the long awaited performance. The performance was supposedly to take place for an entire hour,

to allow them play their entire second album, which they were on the verge to promote as it was

not doing well during that period. The band was welcomed to the stage and they began the music

using the instruments. A range of instruments were present on the stage that included strings,

drums, and other flutes added onto the sound of their songs. The presence of guitars made them

look like a complete rock band, however, they mostly sounded like pop musicians than rock

musicians. This is a notable experience, having watched and experienced several rock music

concerts, how they interact to their music and fans. The felling of rock songs did not feel same to

what the band was playing on stage.

The playlist consisted of 23 songs played in intervals, with the introduction song titled

“the 1975.” The songs were arranged in the order according to their first two albums. This was to

entice the crowd using the existing album and the new album they had just produced. This led to

the growing demand for fresh songs from the fans, who went ahead to love the performance than

the real audio and visuals of the songs. The second song was “love me” which began at 00:01:12

and continued throughout the performance to 00:04:52 when their song titled “UGH!” began.

The transitions between the songs were slow and allowed the fans to react to the new songs,

especially the ones they loved. The final song was “the sound” that was played at 01:47:25 of the

performance period. The entire playlist had the feeling of pop songs played with a rock-alike

band, which was extremely popular in the UK.

The performance was a mixture of both high and low notes during the entire

performance. The songs that had low notes included “a change of heart” performed at 00:12:45

of the performance. However, the high notes included the song “she’s American” which began

with high notes and vigor at 00:47:33 of the performance. This demonstrates the variations

experienced during the performance making their entire performance unique compared to several

performers who begin from low to high or vice versa.

Similar to the notes used in the song, the aspect of emotions are invoked at different

levels in the performance by the 1975 band. The different songs have different emotions, which

are projected to the audience based on the voice, message, and tone of the music. For instance,

sadness is demonstrated in the song “the robber” as the artists demonstrate how they lost their

loved ones. During this performance period, the fans were mostly quiet due to the state of

emotions. Furthermore, the facial expressions and physical activities during the stage

performance of the tune demonstrated the sadness in the faces and actions of the performers. The

song “Money” was played and elevated enjoyment as an emotion between the performers and the

audience. This was visible from the clapping back to the tune, the smiles on the faces of

performers, their movement around the stage, and finally the message of the song. The

differences between the two performances are based on the fact that one experienced extreme

quietness from the audience who were enjoying and clapping back their hands in the other

performance. It demonstrated the art of variance of emotions in performance skills of music.
