Lesson Aims :

Demonstrate elementary knowledge of evidence-based design approach as an essential part of the

design process.

Demonstrate understanding of common types of design research and methods relevant to design
process.

Demonstrate understanding of basic tools necessary to investigate questions toward design ideas in
different contexts.
Design research approaches’
parameters & factors and
design process.
Evidence-Based Design for
Interior Designers:
“A design solution is only as good as the quality of its research. Evidence-based design
is an approach in which qualitative and quantitative research inform
decisions. Evidence-Based Design for Interior Designers examines how designers
conduct research into commercial and residential spaces and use this research to
achieve optimal design solutions”.

Design Research & Methods:
The Approach…
In design research & methods, the approach involves the description of the plan to investigate the
phenomenon under study in a structured(quantitative), unstructured(qualitative) or a combination of
the two methods (qualitative & quantitative).

The main parameters of design research approach:

-The time, place, and sources of data collection.

-Population, sample, and sampling technique.
-Tools and methods of data collection.
-Methods of the data analysis.

The major consideration for design research approach selection:

The selection of a research design largely depends on the nature of the research problem, the research
available, accessible of subjects, and research ethics.
The main factors affecting selection of
a design research approach:

-Nature of the research problem/project

-Purpose of the study
-Research’s knowledge and experience
-Researcher’s/designer interest and motivation
-Research ethics and principles
-Subjects/participants
-Resources
-Time
-Possible control on extraneous variables
-Users of the study findings

The 8 EBD Steps and the process of basing decisions about the built environment
With reference to Friedow, B., (2012), An Evidence Based Design Guide for Interior Designers

“Role of EBD in the Interior Design Profession:

Designers have always intuitively known the value of design decisions on the quality of
human experiences. Social and behavioral scientists have added to this a body of research
that increases our understanding of how design impacts these experiences. Now it is possible
to use research to answer critical questions of why this happens and how designers can
improve the human experience:

Preparing for Research

1. Defining research goals and objectives
2. Finding reliable sources for relevant evidence
3. Analyzing relevant evidence
4. Creating relevant design concepts
5. Developing a hypothesis
Conducting Research
6. Understanding research methodologies
7. Understanding and creating research tools
8. Measuring research performance results”.
