This course introduces fundamental concepts in solid and structural mechanics applicable to mechanical engineering. Students will learn to explain stress and strain, solve problems involving stress and strain, perform tensile tests to derive material properties, and apply equations governing stresses and deformations of thin-walled pressure vessels. Content includes elasticity, torsion, strain energy, and analysis of pressure vessels. The course will be delivered through lectures, discussions, demonstrations, and labs. Students will be continuously assessed and take a final exam.

Credit Hours: 45 Hours Purpose: To introduce students to fundamental concepts in Solid and Structural Mechanics applicable in mechanical engineering. Learning Outcomes: By the end of this course unit the student should be able to: i. Explain the concept of stress and strain, relationships with elastic constants, ii. Solve problems on stress and strain iii. Carry out the tensile test and explain the properties that can be derived from it. iv. Derive and apply the basic equations governing stresses and deformations of thin walled pressure vessels Course Content: Behavior of materials under static loading: Stress and strain in simple tension, load extension diagram; the stress-strain diagram, linear elasticity and Hooke’s law, elastic limit, 0.2% proof stress, ultimate strength, allowable or working stress, safety factor. Elastic constants; Young’s modulus of elasticity, Poisson’s ratio, modulus of rigidity; relations between elastic constants, volumetric strain. Analysis of design in simple tension and compression, Thermal stresses and strains. Elastic torsion analysis; shafts and thin-walled tubes, strain energy in torsion and torsion combined with thrust. Strain energy in tension, compression and shear. Analysis of thin-walled pressure vessels: Hoop and longitudinal stresses and strains for cylinder and sphere, volumetric strain, bulk modulus of contained fluid, and pressure effects. Mode of Delivery: Lecture, Class discussions, demonstrations, Multimedia (computer, Internet, CD, DVD, film), Laboratory/workshop practical and assignments.
