IV. LEARNING PHASES Learning Activities
Timeframe
1. Introduction ½ day Analyze the given picture, what can you
notice? What do you think is the reason why
the man is problematic?

If the
computer device is not working properly, it
is your opportunity as student from ICT class
to conduct basic testing procedure in your
computer hardware.

Thus, it is your task this week to know the

importance of computer hardware testing,
its procedures and some reminders that will
help you to perform such task.

2. Development ½ day Why is Testing Necessary?

Is your PC healthy? Do not be too sure. Think back to when you heard
a plop sound coming from the hard drive. Or maybe you remember the last
time your Internet connection was down.
The best way to find out what is wrong is to take a proactive
approach: Check under your PC's hood with the following mostly free
diagnostic tools and see if anything is amiss--before disaster strikes.
But before we proceed in knowing the details about hardware
testing, let us first identify the parts of computer hardware to be checked.
Parts of Computer Hardware to be Checked
1. Computer Monitor and its peripherals
• No power or display.
• Loose or improper connections
• Not properly installed the video card component in the computer

2. Keyboard and Mouse

Keyboard
• Loose connections or the keyboard connector is connected to the
wrong port.

IV. LEARNING PHASES Learning Activities

• Error in Keyboard Keys
• Bent or broken pin
Mouse
• Loose connections or the mouse connector is connected to the
wrong port.
• Accumulation of dust at the bottom of the mouse surface.

3. I/O port and devices

• Connection between the I/O port and the peripheral device
• A faulty cable between the I/O port and the peripheral device
• A faulty peripheral device

4. Power supply
• Power related problems and not caused by the memory (No electricity)
• The cord is not firmly seated in the wall socket and in the power supply
socket.
• The power plug is not connected properly.
• Any power-on or system startup failures or lockups.
• Spontaneous rebooting or intermittent lockups during normal operation.

Learning Task 1: Matching Type

Directions: Match the computer hardware parts to its common problem that
you may encounter. Choose the letter of your answer from the box.

1. Monitor A. Not properly installed the video card component

2. Power Supply in the computer
3. Keyboard B. Loose connections or the keyboard connector is
4. Mouse connected to the wrong port.
5. I/O port devices C. Overheating due to fan failure.
D. A faulty cable between the I/O port and the
peripheral device
E. Loose connections or the mouse connector is
connected to the wrong port.

3. Engagement 1 day Testing Computer Hardware

As an ICT student, it is very important to know the different parts of a
computer hardware and what problems you may encounter from it. So, it is
very important to be aware of and understand them.
In this part, the following are the different testing method you can use
in testing your computer hardware, specifically in your computer monitor,
keyboard, mouse, I/O port and devices and power supply.

1. Computer Monitor and its Peripherals

Follow the Guide Below:
Suggested
IV. LEARNING PHASES Learning Activities
Timeframe
1. Unplug the monitor from the wall.
2. Unplug the cord from the back of the monitor and wait one minute.
3. Plug the monitor cord back into the Monitor and a known-good
wall outlet and press the Monitor power button.
4. If this still does not work, try with known-good power cord.

2. Keyboard
• Loose connections or the keyboard connector is connected to the
wrong port.
Follow the Guide Below:
1. Check the physical connection to make sure that the keyboard is
properly connected to its rightful port.
• Error in Keyboard Keys
Follow the Guide Below:
1. Start and Click Control Panel
2. Click System and Click “Open Device Manager”
3. Right-click on the listing for your computer's keyboard. Select the
"Scan for Hardware Changes" option from the menu. The Device
Manager will now test your computer's keyboard. If an "error" icon
appears next to the listing, there is a problem with your computer's
keyboard. Right-click the listing for the device again and select
"Properties" for more information about the specifics of the error.
• Bent or broken pin
Follow the Guide Below:
1. If the pins are bent, then unplug the cable and straight them with
the small pin tool.
2. In case, you find damaged pins or missing pins then you must buy a
new keyboard in such scenario.
3.
3. Mouse
• Loose connections or the mouse connector is connected to the wrong
port.
Follow the Guide Below:
1. Check the physical connection to make sure that the mouse is
properly connected to its rightful port. Still not working? Time to a
buy a new mouse, then.
• Accumulation of dust at the bottom of the mouse surface.
Follow the Guide Below:
1. Clean the dust at the bottom of the mouse surface. Clean or
change your mousepad.

4. Power Supply

Reminder: Always seek proper help and assistance from your

parents/guardians upon checking this part.
It is rarely recommended that an inexperienced user open a power
supply to make repairs because of the dangerous high voltages present.
Even when unplugged, power supplies can retain dangerous voltage and
must be discharged (like a monitor) before service.

Follow the Guide Below:

1. Check AC power input. Make sure the cord is firmly seated in the
wall socket and in the power supply socket. Try a different cord.
2. Check DC power connections. Make sure the motherboard and
disk drive power connectors are firmly seated and making good
contact. Check for loose screws.
3. Check DC power output. Use a digital multimeter to check for
proper voltages. If it's below spec, replace the power supply.

4. Check installed peripherals. Remove all boards and drives and
retest the system. If it works, add back in items one at a time until
the system fails again. The last item added before the failure returns
is likely defective.

Learning Task 2: Graphic Organizer

Directions: Make a graphic organizer showing the process of testing
methods done in a computer hardware. Choose only one (1) from Monitor,
Mouse, Keyboard, Power Supply. Use the given format of graphic organizer.

4. Assimilation 1 day Hardware Testing and Documentation

Test the following computer peripherals and equipment with the use of the
guide in testing computer hardware. Document your testing with the use of
an accomplishment form.

Learning Task 3: Testing a Computer Unit (Individual Activity)

Directions: Conduct a hardware testing for each component, fill-up the
needed information using your hardware testing form. Using the hardware
testing form, cite the tools to be used and include the steps in conducting it.
Likewise, fill-up the accomplishment form, write check if the component of
computer hardware is working or not.
Example:
