Da Kink Response Questions

1. What makes a hair style both a personal and a political statement for Black
people?

Hair style for black people is a personal and political statement because it tells us
about their history and shows what kind a person.

2. What is a hairdresser being compared to and why?

A hairdresser is being compared to a family doctor because they can understand


customer’s expectations and felling. They also pay attention to their customer’s looks and
what well for them.

3. The title of the play is a metaphor. Explain what is being compared and reasons
for this.

The title of the play is “da kink in my hair”. It’s a metaphor because the word kink
represents the problems that black women’s think about and the problems that black
women have. The women’s who get their hair done by salon, they do not removed there
kink but they get the kink at their mind.

1. The names in the play are written in lower on purpose. Why do you think Trey
Anthony does this?

I think the reason she does this is to be different from other. She wants to try
something new and how the reader fillet about it. The other authors capitalize the names
in their books.

2. Can you explain the reason for the different spelling of the word women?

I think she spelled it differently because that’s the way she wants us to say it. That
way the play completes change.

3. What are Trey Anthony’s reasons for why she writes?

Trey Anthony writes because she wants to show us what she thinks about black
women and share the different life between black women and other women. And she also
wants a book that tells about them and easy for us to find out.
1. What do Novelette’s words and actions reveal about her character? Use specific
examples from the play to support your answer.

Novelette’s words and action reveal to the reader that she knows the meaning of
life. She can look after herself alone, without anyone’s help she is one and only women
that have faith in her. Everybody tell her about their stressed week they had and love to
talk about it, that way people will come to her store. Sherelle came into Novelette’s hair
salon to fix her hair and start to talk about her week so she can go first but she told her
she would do her hair when she is done with others who came first.

2. Where does Shawnette’s pain come from? What is ‘the kink’ in her hair? What
does it mean for her?

Shawnette’s pain comes from a long time relationship that been done forever and
the kink in her hair tell us why her relationship ended. It also tells us that never put your
boyfriend above everything, no matter how much u love him. It also means once you
have kink in your hair you have to carry on until your last birth.

3. Compare Patsy’s story with that of Sherelle’s. How are their stories similar?
Explain your answer. How does each woman deal with the pain of their life
differently?

Pasty’s and Serelle’s story’s similar that the both can’t forget about past and full
of pain. Pasty can’t move on with her life because she lost her son and most of the time
she think about past. Sherelle lost her boyfriend, who she love the most. After Pasty deals
with her pain normally all Sherelle kills herself because of the pain that she got from her
boyfriend.

4. DO you think that Enid’s character and story is different from the other women?
Explain your answer.

I think Enid’s character and story is different from the other women because she
does everything in passion. She doesn’t look for her life partner or her lover. She is
waiting for the right time. Enid knows how painful to have a relationship and how
enjoyable is life without having a relationship. Sentence

5. Act Two of the play begins with the Bathroom Scene. What is the purpose of this
scene?

The purpose is this scene is importance of black women’s hair and how it shows
the type of personality they have.
6. Sharmaine says to her mom, “You didn’t teach me how to fight you.” Explain
what you think she means by this.

I think Sharmaine is trying to say here that her mother teach her how to fight with
problems in life. Her mother help her out with everything now that she is lesbian her
mother is not happy with it. She doesn’t have anyone to look after her when she is in
treble. Without her mother’s support she does not know what is right for her and feels
weak in her life.

7. What do you think of Stacey-Anne’s story? What circumstances has she faced in
her life? How does the poem “in hour of belief” by d’bi young give a voice to her
suffering?

Stacey- Anne’s had a very bad childhood and she was being abuse by her
stepfather, which is really mean full. Her stepfather gave her what she needs that’s why
she couldn’t fight back also her mother told her never do anything that makes him mad.
The poem tells her that what she was suffering from and she never stand up and protect
herself.

8. Do you think that Nia’s character should have forgiven her mother for all the pain
she had to endure? Explain your answer.

Yes Nia’s character should have forgive her mother for all the pain that she been
though. Her mother never knew about the pain that she will get after her dead. Her
mother was the one who gave food and a place to sleep also growing up a child is not
something that everyone knows proper way.
