(2) Ratiometer Movement

This unit consists of two field coils connected in series
and a return coil supplied with a constant unidirectional
current.

Figure 5 shows the vectors representing the magnetic

fields of these coils : h' is the field produced by the
field coils, h is that produced by the return coil and H
is the resulting field.

The combined action of the two fields, h and h', causes

rotation of the magnet which stabilizes in the direction
defined by the resultant H.

(3) Electronic Sub-Assembly

The variable resistance (RV) in the thermometer bulb forms

a bridge circuit with the three identical resistors R.
This bridge is energized with a DC voltage produced by
the electronic sub-assembly which also includes a constant
unidirectional current generator for energizing the return
coil.

B. Detailed Operation

The schematic diagram of the complete electronic sub-assembly

is shown in figure 6. Operation of this sub-assembly can be
divided into two main functions :

- power supply,
- differential amplification and ratiometer driving circuit.

(1) Power Supply (Ref. Fig. 7)

The + 28 VDC supply voltage is applied to diodes CR301

and CR302, and then to low-value resistor Rl via fuse Fl.
Zener diode VRl absorbs voltage peaks, while Cl acts as
a smoothing filter.

65.49.01
Page 13

JAEGER
Component Maintenance Manual
64807-408-l

The + input of amplifier 21-3 is biased by Zener diode

VR2 (point A); it is then at + 6.2 V with respect to the
28 V return line (ground). The output of 21-3 drives
transistor Ql connected in a common-collector configuration.
The emitter of Ql feeds the voltage divider consisting
of R2 (in parallel with R3) and R4. The ratio of these
resistors is such that + 7 V is obtained at the emitter
of Ql with respect to point A: this voltage is smoothed
out by capacitor C2.

The voltage at point A is applied to an impedance-matching

circuit consisting of Zl-1 whose output, smoothed by C4,
provides the 0 V reference while the 28 V return line
provides - 6.2 V.

In addition, + 6.2 V is provided by means of a network

consisting of VR3, R5 and R6.

Consequently, the following output voltages are delivered

by the power supply to the various circuits : + 7 V,
+ 6.2 V, 0 V and -6.2 V.

(2) Differential Amplification and Ratiometer Driving Circuit

(Ref. Fig. 8)

The thermometer bulb (RV) is connected in a Wheatstone

bridge constituted by R301, R303, RlOl and potentiometer
R302; this bridge is supplied with a stabilized voltage
through Zener diode VRlOl.

Points a and b are connected to a differential amplifier

comprising amplifier 2101-4 and resistors R304, R104,
R102, R103 ; as these resistors all have the same value,
VC = Va - Vb.

Point c is connected to an inverting amplifier consisting

of 2101-3 and resistors R105, R107 ; this provides :

Vd = - vc R107
R105

Point d is connected to a current generator made up of

2101-1, resistor R201 and potentiometer R202.

The field coils of the ratiometer are connected between

the output of 2101-l and its input. Consequently, they
are fed with a current whose intensity depends on the
thermometer bulb and whose direction depends on the out-
of- balance of the resistance bridge.

The point of balance of the bridge is adjusted by means

of R302 (zero adjustment).

The intensity of the current, for a given out-of-balance

of the bridge, is adjusted by means of R202 (slope
adjustment).
The return coil L3 is fed with a constant current, always
flowing in the same direction, by means of the network
comprising Zener diode VR102, amplifier 2101-2 and
transistor QlOl.

(4) Friction Test

NOTE : The indicator remains connected as for the previous
test.
(a) With the indicator not tapped, adjust RVl to bring
the pointer, in turn, to a few cardinal points on the
dial, first with increasing values and then with
decreasing values.
(b) At each setting, the value of RVl should not differ
from the corresponding resistance value given in
table 101 by more than the following tolerances :
4 5 ohms at 1OO'C
2 7.9 ohms over the remainder of the range

(5) Position Test

NOTE : The indicator remains connected as for the accuracy
test.
(a) Carry out the following procedure at a few cardinal
points on the dial.
(b) Hold the indicator in any position and adjust RVl to
bring the pointer to a scale mark. Check that the
value of RVl does not differ from the corresponding
resistance value noted when the instrument is in its
normal position by more than 2.6 ohms.

2. TROUBLE SHOOTING
A. General
When the serviceability of an indicator is suspect, it should
be subjected to the test procedure described in para. 1 of
this section until a particular test is failed . Reference
should then be made to the following paragraph and remedial
action taken as necessary. The indicator should then again be
subjected to the testing procedure until either it fails to
pass a particular test or passes successfully through the
entire sequence of tests.
This fault tracing, location, repair and re-testing cycle
should be repeated until the indicator finally passes the
test.
