CHAPTER 7

IMPULSE, MOMENTUM AND IMPACT

PREPARED BY: ENGR. LUCIA V. ORTEGA 5/9/2021 1

EXAMPLE 7.10

Car B 1500 𝑘𝑔 traveling west at 48 𝑘𝑝ℎ collides with car

A 1600 𝑘𝑔 traveling north at 32 𝑘𝑝ℎ as shown. If the two
cars become entangled and moved together as a unit after
the crash, determine the following: a) the magnitude of their
common velocity immediately after the impact, b) the
direction of the velocity vector with the north direction, and
c) the distance that the two cars which moved together as a
unit had traveled after the impact if the coefficient of friction
between the tires and the road is 0.50.

EXAMPLE 7.10

❖ Magnitude of their common velocity

Conservation of momentum along east-west direction:
𝑚𝐴 𝑣𝐴 + 𝑚𝐵 𝑣2 = 𝑚𝐴 𝑣𝑥 + 𝑚𝐵 𝑣𝑥
1600 0 + 1500 48 = 1600 + 1500 𝑣𝑥
𝑣𝑥 = −23.236 𝑘𝑝ℎ
Conservation of momentum along north-south direction:
𝑚𝐴 𝑣𝐴 + 𝑚𝐵 𝑣2 = 𝑚𝐴 𝑣𝑦 + 𝑚𝐵 𝑣𝑦
1600 32 + 1500 0 = 1600 + 1500 𝑣𝑦
𝑣𝑦 = 16.512 𝑘𝑝ℎ

EXAMPLE 7.10

❖ Magnitude of their common velocity

Resultant common velocity:

𝑣= 𝑣𝑥 2 + 𝑣𝑦 2

𝑣= −23.236 2 + 16.512 2

𝒗 = 𝟐𝟖. 𝟓𝟎𝟓 𝒌𝒑𝒉 Answer

EXAMPLE 7.10

❖ distance that the two cars which moved together as a unit had
traveled after the impact if the coefficient of friction between the tires
and the road is 0.50:
Using work-energy equation:
1
𝑊𝑜𝑟𝑘 + − 𝑊𝑜𝑟𝑘 − = 2 𝑚 𝑣2 2 − 𝑣 2
1 2 2
0 − 0.50 𝑚1 + 𝑚2 9.81 𝑠 = 2 𝑚1 + 𝑚2 0 − 28.505

EXAMPLE 7.11

A ball moving with a horizontal velocity of

𝑚
magnitude 𝑣𝑜 = 0.4 𝑠 drops from A to a
frictionless floor. Knowing that the ball hit the
floor at a distance 𝑑𝑜 = 80 𝑚𝑚 from B and that
the length of its first bounce is 𝑑1 = 140 𝑚𝑚,
determine the following:
a. The coefficient of restitution between the ball
and the floors.
b. The height ℎ1 of the first bounce.
c. How long the ball will keep bouncing after
first hitting the floor.
