INTRODUCTION
Energy and environmental engineering are a branch of energy engineering which seeks to
efficiently use energy and to maintain the environment. Energy engineers require knowledge
across many disciplines. Careers include work in the built environment, renewable and
traditional energy industries. In this area, solar radiation is important and must be understood.
Solar radiation affects the Earth's weather and daylight available. This affects not only the Earth's
environment but also the smaller internal environments which we create.

Energy engineering requires at least an understanding of mechanics, thermodynamics,

mathematics, materials, stoichiometry, electrical machines, manufacturing processes and energy
systems. While, Environmental engineering can be branched into two main areas: internal
environments and outdoor environments. Internal environments may consist of housing or
offices or other commercial properties. In this area, the environmental engineering sometimes
stands for the designing of building services to condition the internal environment to a
comfortable state or the removal of excess pollutants such as carbon dioxide or other harmful
substances. External environments may be water courses, air, land or seas, and may require new
strategies for harnessing energy or the creation of treatment facilities for polluting technologies.

This broad degree area covers many areas but is mainly mechanically and electrically
biased. It seeks to explore cleaner, more efficient ways of using fossil fuels, while investigating
and developing systems using renewable and sustainable resources, such as solar, wind and wave
energy. This term paper aim to determine the scope of Energy and Environmental engineering
and their responsibilities.

Difference Between Energy and Environmental Engineering

Energy engineering requires at least an understanding of mechanics, thermodynamics,
mathematics, materials, stoichiometry, electrical machines, manufacturing processes and energy
systems. While, Environmental engineering can be branched into two main areas: internal
environments and outdoor environments.

Fields and Studies under Energy and Environmental engineering

Heat and Energy Processes

Turbines and incineration plants, purification equipment, energy processes in industry

and the efficiency improvement of these, heat pumps and air conditioning plants are
technologies dealt with in the field Heat and Energy Processes.

Energy System Planning

The interaction between different energy carriers is a topic of national and international
importance and is central in the planning and operation of our current and not to mention
our future energy systems.

The sale of electric power on a free, international power market and the large-scale power
exchange across countries are growing. How does this affect energy consumption and the
environment, and how can measures aimed at users of buildings and in industry become
important? Questions of this type are dealt with in this field.

Electrical Engineering

The entire electrical infrastructure must be further developed and maintained to ensure
effective and reliable energy supply. Electric engines and control systems are central to

4
all kinds of electric cars, trains or ships: hybrid, fuel cell or battery operated. These are
examples of technologies you will learn about in Electrical Energy Engineering.

Responsibilities of Energy Engineer

Energy engineers work across the full energy lifecycle, including extraction, production,
conversion, transmission and distribution, and play an integral role in processing energy from a
variety of sources, such as solar, wind and geothermal power, nuclear power, water, oil, gas and
biofuels.

The primary responsibilities of energy engineers vary depending on the specific project
that they are working on, their professional background and expertise, and the sector in which
they are employed. However, various activities are common across the board.

Requirement to be Energy engineer

The first step to becoming an energy engineer involves earning a bachelor's degree.
Bachelor's degree programs are available as a Bachelor of Science in Energy Engineering,
Bachelor of Science in Mechanical and Energy Engineering, or a bachelor's degree in energy
systems engineering. These 4-year programs include classes in chemical science, mechanics,
differential equations, renewable energy systems, power electronics, energy systems, and hybrid
transportation.

The second step to becoming an energy engineer involves simply working as an engineer.
Working as an energy engineer usually requires work experience. However, some employers hire
individuals to work as junior engineers. These positions often don't have experience
requirements and are available to recent engineering program graduates.

The third step to becoming an energy engineer consists of earning a professional

engineering license. Many states require that engineers be licensed, regardless of the type of
engineering they perform. Usually, becoming licensed requires possessing at least a bachelor's
degree from an officially accredited school, having four to six years of work experience, and
passing an exam. Many employers only hire licensed applicants.

The fourth step to becoming an energy engineer consists of actually working as an energy
engineer. After gaining experience and becoming licensed, individuals are usually eligible for

5
energy engineering positions. Employers of energy engineers often seek individuals who have
experience working as an engineer in general or as an energy engineer.

Different Forms of Energy

Mechanical Energy

Mechanical Energy is moving energy. It is the form that we most see around us.
All moving objects produce mechanical energy. The movements within machines is also
mechanical energy.

Electrical Energy

Energy produced by electrons moving through a substance is known as electrical

energy. We mostly see electric energy in batteries and from the outlets in our homes.
Electrical energy lights our homes, run motors, and makers our TVs and radios work.

Electromagnetic Energy

Electromagnetic energy is a term used to describe all the different kinds of

energies released into space by stars such as the Sun. These kinds of energies include
some that you will recognize and some that will sound strange.

Chemical Energy

Chemical Energy is a form of potential energy and is the energy stored in food,
gasoline or chemical combinations.

2 Main Sources of Energy

Conventional Source of Energy

Conventional sources of energy are the natural energy resources which are present
in a limited quantity and are being used for a long time. They are called non-renewable
sources as once they are depleted; they cannot be generated at the speed which can
sustain its consumption rate. They are formed from decaying matter over hundreds of
millions of years.

6
Non – Conventional Source of Energy

Non-conventional sources of energy are the energy sources which are

continuously replenished by natural processes. These cannot be exhausted easily, can be
generated constantly so can be used again and again, such as solar energy, wind energy,
tidal energy, biomass energy and geothermal energy etc. The energy obtained from non-
conventional sources is known as non-conventional energy. These sources do not pollute
the environment and do not require heavy expenditure. They are called renewable
resources as they can be replaced through natural processes at a rate equal to or greater
than the rate at which they are consumed.

Salary of an Energy Engineering in the Philippines

A person working as an Energy Engineer in Philippines typically earns around 41,400
PHP per month. Salaries range from 19,000 PHP (lowest) to 65,800 PHP (highest).

This is the average monthly salary including housing, transport, and other benefits.
Energy Engineer salaries vary drastically based on experience, skills, gender, or location. Below
you will find a detailed breakdown based on many different criteria.

Responsibilities of Environmental Engineering

Environmental engineers use the principles of engineering, soil science, biology, and
chemistry to develop solutions to environmental problems.

Work Environment of Environmental Engineering

Environmental engineers work in a variety of settings because of the nature of the tasks
they do. When they are working with other engineers and urban and regional planners,
environmental engineers are likely to be in offices. When they are carrying out solutions through
construction projects, they are likely to be at construction sites.

Requirement to be Environmental Engineering

Environmental engineers must have a bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering or
a related field, such as civil, chemical, or general engineering. Employers also value practical
experience. Therefore, cooperative engineering programs, which provide college credit for
structured job experience, are valuable as well.

7
Branch of Environmental Engineering
Internal Environments

Internal environments may consist of housing or offices or other commercial

properties. In this area, the environmental engineering sometimes stands for the designing
of building services to condition the internal environment to a comfortable state or the
removal of excess pollutants such as carbon dioxide or other harmful substances.

External Environments

External environments may be water courses, air, land or seas, and may require
new strategies for harnessing energy or the creation of treatment facilities for polluting
technologies.

Different roles under Environmental Engineering

Environmental engineers use the principles of engineering, soil science, biology, and
chemistry to develop solutions to environmental problems. They work to improve recycling,
waste disposal, public health, and water and air pollution control. They also address global
issues, such as unsafe drinking water, climate change, and environmental sustainability.

Environmental engineers typically do the following:

 Prepare, review, and update environmental investigation reports

 Design projects that lead to environmental protection, such as water reclamation facilities
or air pollution control systems
 Obtain, update, and maintain plans, permits, and standard operating procedures
 Provide technical support for environmental remediation projects and for legal actions
 Analyze scientific data and do quality-control checks
 Monitor the progress of environmental improvement programs
 Inspect industrial and municipal facilities and programs in order to ensure compliance
with environmental regulations
 Advise corporations and government agencies about procedures for cleaning up
contaminated sites

8
Advancements in Environmental Engineering
Sewers

A sanitary sewer or foul sewer is an underground pipe or tunnel system for

transporting sewage from houses and commercial buildings to treatment facilities or
disposal. Sanitary sewers are part of an overall system called a sewage system or
sewerage.

Aqueducts

The aqueducts were mainly made of materials like concrete, cement, brick and
stone. They would often originate at springs in hilly areas, but dams and reservoirs were
also built to feed them from rivers or streams.

Biofiltration System

Biofiltration is the process of passing air or water through a porous, moist

material containing microorganisms in order to remove odors and contaminants.

High-altitude Wind Energy from Kites

Airborne wind energy is the direct use or generation of wind energy by the use of
aerodynamic or aerostatic lift devices. AWE technology is able to harvest high altitude
winds, in contrast to wind turbines, which use a rotor mounted on a tower. The term high-
altitude wind power has been used to refer to AWE systems.

Salary of Environmental Engineering in the Philippines

The average monthly salary of an Environmental Engineer in Philippines ranges between
Php 25,000 - Php 45,700 (median: Php 36,400).
