MPI Hydrostatics- Assignment 1 Std 9

Note: atmospheric pressure = 10⁵ Pa. Density of water = 1 g/cc g=10 m/s²

1) A submarine shell can withstand a pressure of 620000 Pa. What is the maximum depth up to
which it can dive in deep sea. Density of sea water = 1.05 g/cc

2) A person is swimming underwater in a sweet-water lake. Density of sweet-water (pure water) is

1 g/cc. He is 2 m below the water surface. What is the pressure on him?

3) A fish can withstand maximum pressure of 250000 Pa. It is swimming in a river up to the
maximum possible depth. Suddenly due to impurities and industrial waste released in the river,
the water density becomes 1.2 g/cc. (a) will it have to come upwards or move downwards if it
has to continue swimming at maximum pressure level? (b) What will be its vertical
displacement?

4) Two immiscible and non-reacting liquids X and Y are kept in a C shaped tube as shown below.
Density of X is 2 g/cc. Find density of Y in kg / m³. Divide that number by 3 and mark that as
your answer.

5) A cuboid tank is 50 cm (length) x 40 cm (width) x 30 cm (height). It is filled with 25.6 kg of liquid

L of density 1600 kg / m³. 36 kg of liquid M of density 1.8 g/cc is then added to the tank. Then
the tank is fully filled with N (density 1.2 g/cc). (a) What is the pressure at the top layer of liquid
L? (b) What is the pressure at top layer of liquid M? All the three liquids do not react and do not
mix with each other

========== ### ==========

Answer Key:

1) Maximum depth for submarine = 49.5 m

2) Pressure on the person is 120000 Pa
3) (a) upwards (b) 2.5 m
4) 500
5) (a) 101440 Pa (b) 102720 Pa
