1. The phrase Scientia Potentia Est, which is often attributed to the English
philosopher Sir Francis Bacon, means “Knowledge is Power”. Explain its
meaning in the context of science and technology and their relation society.
Provide two (2) examples based on our discussions on Historical Antecedents and
Intellectual Revolutions, as well as Nation Building. (30 pts)

My own understanding about the quotation above from Sir Francis Bacon
is that knowledge is the result of our curiosity. Our curiosity is our training
ground to unleash our urge to learn. What happens when we train? We evolve.
Curiosity gives knowledge and knowledge gives power. Evolution is present
because of our knowledge. Knowledge will always be our backbone on how to
handle things that happen around us.

Historical Antecedents:
1. Gregor Mendel’s concept of “Pea Plant”. He noticed that its part has different
characteristics/traits. Gregor Mendel said that “These traits could be
transmitted from parents to offspring” and then He tried breeding.
2. Human Genome Project tells us about every part/characteristic that we have in
our cells or in a nutshell, genetics.

Intellectual Revolutions
1. Nicolaus Copernicus proposed the alternative theory regarding the structure of
the universe.
2. Charles Darwin’s concept of evolution.

Nation Building
1. Baybayin was used by Filipinos (Alphabet)
2. Plants and herbs was used for medication

2. Why is history important when studying the relationship of science and
technology to society? (20 pts.)

History to science will always aim for the “wide” truth. Science is also
history because it is future oriented and will always walk from generation to
generation. History is a part of science that makes the prediction, analysis and
output that improves a certain study. History is a part of the past and science will
be a part of everything. History to technology is the urge of development from
generation to generation. Technology solves the problems that society faces.
Problems will always bloom from generation to generation but with the help of
history, it will be the stepping to stone to create the answer for a certain problem.
History to society will always have an interaction. History is the seed from the
past and we are the “bloom” in the present. We carry a certain practice, culture,
mindset and etc. History helps the society to understand & develop about the
world. We cannot understand & develop if we don’t have a grasp of what
happened in the past. The things that we need to solve, the things we need to
know and the things that happened. Our history will always be a thing that will
always be alive in humanity.

3. How does the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) help in nation
building? Aside from the DOST, identify another Department within the
Executive Branch (Education, Finance, Budget and Management, etc.) that
utilizes science and technology to help in nation building? (40 pts.)

The DOST’s mission is to direct, lead and coordinate the country’s

scientific and technological efforts geared towards the maximum economic and
social benefits for the people. DOST provides direction, leadership and
supervision. My example will be Department of Health. They have a mission to
lead the country in the development of a productive, resilient, equitable and
people-centered health system.
