The chorus “Sing unto God” is from the oratorio Judas Maccabaeus, composed by George Frideric

Handel (1685–1759) in 1746. The libretto was written by Rev. Thomas Morell (1703–1784), and is
primarily based on the biblical First Book of Maccabees.

The Text
The chorus celebrates the Israelites’ victory over their enemies. Morell’s text reads:

Sing unto God, and high affections raise,

to crown this conquest with unmeasur’d praise.

In order to make Handel’s composition more useful in a worship setting, a new text has been written:
Sing unto God. Let joyful voices raise

Morell’s text is included in italics for those who wish to perform this chorus in its original context.

The Music
Handel wrote “Sing unto God” in the key of D major. This edition is in C major in order to make the
work more accessible to singers and instrumentalists. One need not apologize for this key change,

since a pitch standard was not yet established in Handel’s day. Musicologists believe that “Baroque
Pitch” was often nearly a semi-tone lower than today’s standard. This suggests that “Sing Unto God”
may have originally sounded closer to the key of D-flat rather than D.
Unless otherwise noted, this edition reproduces Handel’s original music, but uses modern clefs and
musical conventions. Dynamic and tempo markings are editorial. In the preparation of this edition,
several public domain scores were consulted, especially the German Handel Society edition of 1866,
as published by Handel scholar and musicologist Friedrich Chrysander (1826–1901).

The Keyboard Arrangement
The accompaniment is a keyboard reduction of the vocal and instrumental parts, based on an ar-
rangement by John Clark Whitfield (1770–1836), who was known as the first to publish a piano
reduction for Handel’s oratorios. Whitfield’s music was adapted by other editors, including Chry-
sander, whose work also informed this edition’s accompaniment.

This choral score offers a synthesis of these arrangements with additional adaptations by the edi-
tor. Most notably, the cue notes in the score may be omitted to simplify the playing of consecutive
sixteenth-note thirds, as in Chrysander’s edition. The lowest note in the bass clef is the original basso
in

continuo, and the part may be further adapted, especially by doubling the bass notes an octave lower
when appropriate. See below for important information regarding the basso continuo part included in
the full score.

The Instrumentation

Handel scored “Sing unto God” for three trumpets, timpani, two violins/oboes, viola, and continuo.
French horn or trombone may substitute for the third trumpet, and a dedicated trombone part doubles
the basso continuo when used with the other brass instruments. The instrumental parts (50-4710B
and 50-4710C) and full score (50-4710A) are compatible with this choral score but are optional.
Depending on which additional instruments are used, the realized basso continue part, composed by
renowned contrapuntist Salomon Jadassohn (1831–1902) and included in the full score with editorial

options, may be used with this choral score. Consult the full score for more information.
Since Handel adapted his music to particular circumstances, some creativity is justified. Although all
instruments may be employed, this piece is successful with the addition of only one or two trum-
pets/oboes, or with brass quartet, or with string quartet, or substituting flutes for oboes. This edition
attempts to preserve the integrity of Handel’s original while providing options to make the chorus
accessible for modern use.
