After reviewing the attached files, students should be able to define the following
terms:

• Intellectual Property

Intellectual property is a way of protect the ideas that we have in different areas such as music,
products, book and even inventions, intellectual property help us to prevent that someone else
could take our ideas. Intellectual Property grants the author, creator and inventor the right to
be recognized as the owner of their creation or invention and, therefore, to be the beneficiary of
it.

• Intellectual Rights

Intellectual rights refer to creations of the mind, basically are ideas that we can have such as
literary and artistic works, scientific and industrial inventions, as well as symbols, names and
images used in commerce.

• Industrial property

Industrial Property refers to the protection that any natural or legal person has over their
inventions, industrial designs, integrated circuits, trademarks, distinctive signs, commercial
slogans and other elements related to the market, industry and commerce.

• Copyright

Copyright is a form of intellectual property law that protects the original work of authorship
including literary, dramatic, musical, and artistic works, such as poetry, novels, movies, songs,
computer software, and architecture, copyright means that the original creators of products
and anyone they give authorization to are the only ones with the exclusive right to reproduce
the work.

• Plant varieties and traditional knowledge in Ecuador

This is a form of intellectual property for a person who has created, developed or discovered a
new plant variety, the ancestral knowledge is also included in this form of intellectual property.
