1. PURPOSE

To establish a safe and effective method of lowering electrical cables in shaft during sinking
operations.

2. SCOPE

This procedure includes the following:

2.1 Preparation.
2.2 Lowering Cables.
2.3 Safety Precautions.

3. RESPONSIBILITIES

The Engineering Foreman together with the Site Electricians is responsible to ensure that the
requirements of this procedure are met.

4. DESCRIPTION OF OPERATIONS

4.1 Preparation (Figure 1)

 Trailing cable suspension between cable X Head and Stage.

 To take place during the re-entry period.

 Electrical power to be switched off at the cable drums – drum to be equipped

with suitable plugs.

 Cable slack to be rolled off each drum for 5.0m, between drum and clamp.

 Clamps to be loosened and slack taken up to between clamps and headgear.

 Clamps are then to be tightened and power switched on.

 Winding Engine Driver, Stagehands and Banksman on duty to be informed

that cables are to be lowered after re-entry period.

4.1.1. Twin clamp system:

- Ensure first set of clamps nearest headgear is fastened.

- Loosen second set of clamps nearest “drum cable reels”

- Feed cable slack of 5.0m off each drum.

- Tighten second set of clamps to prevent run away when cables are
lowered.

- Loosen first set of clamps to facilitate feeding down shaft.

4.2 Lowering of Cables

 When the stage has locked after lowering for lashing, the cable lowering
winch is to be switched on and driver notified.

 Stagehand to be notified of cables being lowered.

 Electrician to ensure area is free of rocks and the protective cover is

removed.

 Signal 4-2 is given to the driver and the cables are guided and slowly lowered
down.

 The cable lowering winch will take up the slack and trip after it has lowered
the cable 5.0m.

 Replace the protective cover.

 Electrician to pull back any vertical cable slack in shaft (Figure 2)

 Install the cable bracket and clamp. Secure all nuts and bolts.

 Notify driver and stagehand that cable lowering is completed.

 Cable lowering winch to be switched off and locked – PAWL System.

4.3 Safety Precautions

 Ensure electrical cable power is switched off – prior to lowering.

 Secure and tighten all clamps at drums after slack is given.

 Notify Driver, Stagehand and Banksman. Prior to lowering cable.

 Ensure all tools and equipment have wrist thongs.

 Safety device between clamps and headgear is operational.

(Tested when cable was lowered and slack taken up)
