the hazards of the active West Valley Fault along Metro Manila and nearby provinces,
in connection with “The Big One”, a potentially destructive earthquake that can affect
the Philippines, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology
(PHIVOLCS). To complete the seminar, the speakers tackled practical do’s and don’ts
during and after an earthquake and practiced Duck-Cover-Hold with the students.

Extends Help to Quake-
stricken Communities
On October 29, 2019, a magnitude 6.5
earthquake hit Mindanao, severely affecting
communities in many regions. This led the
presidents of different recognized student
organizations in FEU Alabang to initiate a donation
drive aptly called #TamarawForMindanao.

Included among the donations of students

were food kits, hygiene kits, clothes, water, and
blankets, which were repacked by batch in huge
boxes with equal amount of goods inside. The
food kits contained instant noodles, canned
goods, and coffee, while the hygiene kits were
comprised of toothbrushes, toothpaste, soaps,
shampoo, tissues, sanitary napkins, and rubbing
alcohol.

Through the Community Extension and Services

Unit, the National Service Reserve Corps
facilitated the collection and repacking of the
donations, which were then turned over to the
National Headquarters of Philippine Red Cross on
November 13, 2019 for distribution.

Walks You through Contemporary Community Life
To offer a glimpse of contemporary community life, Tamaraws of the South launched
the NSTP Lakaran Photo Gallery showing the life of its partner communities. The gallery ran
from November 7 to 9, 2019 exhibiting community profiles and their needs based on the
assessment of the students of the National Service Training Program (NSTP). The gallery
was comprised of photos of people doing their everyday routines in the community, some
selling their crops, kids playing, and even mothers sweeping their street.

Dr. Zandra N. Maningas, senior director of the academic services of FEU Alabang, delivered
a speech about how we as students can help spread awareness and help communities
thru NSTP. She also led the ribbon-cutting during the opening ceremony. This was followed
the next day with a total of 218 students visiting the gallery, while another 92 students had
their pictures taken inside the photo booth.

The NSTP Lakaran Photo Gallery was sponsored by the National Service Reserve Corps.

NOCHE BUENA

FEU Alabang to Tamaraw Service Personnel:

IT’S CHRISTMAS
TREAT!
To celebrate the Christmas season, the National
Service Reserve Corps (NSRC) distributed Noche Buena
packages on December 14, 2019 to FEU Alabang’s service
personnel and guards. Aside from acknowledging the
extended Tamaraw community’s selfless dedication
through the gift-giving, the National Service Reserve Corps
also made this possible as an act of solidarity to those who
make the campus safe, secure, and clean.

As Filipinos, it has been our tradition to

celebrate the night before Christmas with our
friends and loved ones all gathered together
to indulge in a scrumptious meal, popularly
known as Noche Buena, which represents our
heartfelt joy and gratitude for the blessings
bestowed upon us and as to welcome
Christmas day. Thus, goods for making family
meals like spaghetti, macaroni salad, and

graham cake were included inside

every Noche Buena package as a
humble gift to our service personnel
and guards as well as their families.

Through these packages, the NSRC

hoped to express their gratitude
and their desire to help reduce every
service personnel’s burdens during
the holiday season.

IT’S CHRISTMAS
TAM!
In celebration of Christmas, FEU Alabang brewed
up a festive fund-raising event with the theme, “It’s
Christmas Tam: Events for a Cause!” on December 17, 2019
at the Student Plaza Gymnasium. Different Registered
Student Organizations (RSO) graced the event with a
special collaborative performance to begin the celebration.
Interactive booths and activities also gave the event a boost
to gamers with online competitions, ML Tam and Tekken
Tam, organized by Association for Computing Machinery
and Junior Philippine Computer Society respectively.
FEU-ture Arts, on the other hand, headed the
Cosplay Tam, where Tamaraws dressed up as their
favorite anime characters. To make the event even
more interesting, the Jail Booth and Dating Booth
were installed by the Tertiary Honor’s Society unit
to enliven the crowd. The highlight of the event,
however, was the FEU Got Talent, where Tamaraws
showcased their prowess in singing, dancing,
poetry writing, and even beat boxing. Landing in
second place were DnA, Robert Roldan, and Erich

Esguerra for their beat box routine.

Daniel Mallari, on the other hand, placed
first runner up for his energetic dancing.
Finally, hailed champion was Jericho
Delos Santos Quintanilla for his rendition
of “Ngayo’y Naririto”.

Since Christmas is an ideal time for the

spirit of giving, “It’s Christmas Tam!”
acted as a fund-raising event with
all the proceeds from the interactive
booths given to Elsie Gaches Village,
an orphanage located in Alabang,
Muntinlupa City.

Barangay Canlubang, Calamba, Laguna on January 12, 2020.

Students of FEU Alabang participated in community theaters, parlor games, gift-giving,

and “salu-salo” or get-together with the community. Story-telling sessions, as one of
Paglusong’s trademark, also ensued with the aim of building character and values through
reading. This was followed with a gathering around the Tuklong or the community hall, to
enjoy a humble yet scrumptious meal, while both children and volunteers shared stories
for the rest of the day.

TAMARAW FOR TAAL

Tamaraws help
Taal evacuees in
Calamba, Laguna
Knee-deep gray ashes from the Taal Volcano
covered homes, trees, and bloated cadavers of
cows and horses last January 12, 2020. The complex,
verdant island within a lake, which used to be a
popular tourist spot, transformed into a vast carpet
of lifeless gray, its eruption covering the island with
toxic ashes, smoke, and the stench of sulfur and
noxious gases. This was the situation in Batangas
and surrounding provinces, leading the residents
to evacuate to neighboring towns, including
Calamba City in Laguna.

To help the victims of the eruption, the Community

Extension and Services Unit of FEU Alabang
organized a project called, “Tamaraw for Taal”,
where FEU’s National Service Reserve Corps led
the distribution of 700 relief bags with hygiene
and food packs in La Mesa Day Care Center, Brgy.
Lamesa, Calamba City, Laguna last January 19, 2020.
Evacuees were mostly from the towns of Talisay
and Laurel in Batangas. Together, the students
and other volunteers from FEU Alabang’s library
services, registrar’s, and human resource offices
helped out in the collecting, sorting, and packing
of relief goods. Meanwhile, in ensuring safety of
the volunteers as well as the proper turnover of the
packages, FEU Alabang’s security personnel also
participated in making the project possible.

On the venue, all student leaders dedicated their

time and effort, not just to personally distribute the
relief packages, but to also exchange stories with
the evacuees to cheer them up from their plight.

ADVISER’S NOTE

CESU’s Note
to the alabang tamaraws

I do not envision our students to be solely

dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge but I actually
visualize a studentry that is actively engaged in the
area of community engagement and development.
Paglusong may be loosely translated into
English as “to immerse” or “to go down”. Some
of you may consider it as walk in the park or a
simple community visit or a barkada field trip.
But Paglusong is a metaphor of our social conditions.
Our students must understand that going down
to our communities means being with our people,
understanding them, helping them in our own capacities,
showing them that there are social identities who really
care. In the eyes of the community, you are not heroes or
messiahs but a kapwa making the first ripple of kindness.
After NSTP, it is expected that you are now
socially aware and responsible members of the
society. But to me, you were just students wishing to
pass a non-major course. Because years from now,
you will be tested and only when you translate the
knowledge, skills, and your arts into an avenue of
social change, you will become a true Tamaraw who
helps build this nation we inherit from our forefathers.
A timeless teacher, Lao Tzu, once said, “Go
to the people. Live with them. Learn from them.
Love them. Start with what they know. Build
with what they have. But with the bestleaders,
when the work is done, the task accomplished,
the people will say ‘We have done this ourselves.”
