The history of the Honda Motor Company began with the vision of
one man - Soichiro Honda. His dream was personal mobility for
everyone.
Soichiro Honda
Founder, Honda Motor Co.
'Challenging the Limits' is a phrase commonly heard across the length and breadth of Honda.
It was made popular by its founder, Soichiro Honda, who knew that his fledgling company
had to out-think and out-perform its competitors every step of the way in order to survive.
After all, he started out at a time when his country was devastated by war.
Honda's Global Vision Soichiro's vision was international in character. His desire
was to lead the world in technology, and make a significant contribution to the creation of a
better society. As a result, most of the products that Honda developed started out by making a
difference. Whether it was the CVCC engine in the sixties or the solar powered car of the
nineties, they all sought to challenge and overcome conventional wisdom.
Honda's belief in the benefits of racing is sincere and unwavering. The company has invested
millions of dollars in building two world-class racing circuits. The Suzuka opened its gates in
September 1962. Located in northern Japan, it has become an integral part of the Grand Prix
calendar. The Twin Ring Motegi, on the other hand, is a racing circuit for fans. Inaugurated
in August 1997, it offers an oval-shaped Super Speedway, an Active Safety Training Park
and the extremely popular Honda automobile museum.
Innovation Everywhere Honda is already, and literally, making big strides in the
development of the world's first humanoid robot. Christened ASIMO, it is designed on the
presumption that if a robot could walk like a human, it may be able to work like one. Honda
is also taking to the skies with its very own aircraft technology. It took a 30-man team only
six years to develop a prototype. Typical of Honda, the project leader was not quite 30 years
of age when the experimental aircraft was first unveiled in 1993. Together, these diverse
ideas prove the one central maxim that is dear to everyone at Honda - Challenging the Limits.
Honda In India
HSCI’s state-of-the-art manufacturing unit was set up in 1997 at Greater Noida, U.P with an
investment of Rs. 450 crore. The green-field project is spread across 150 acres of land (over
6,00,000 sq. m.).
The initial installed capacity of the plant was 30,000 cars per annum, which was thereafter
increased to 50,000 cars on a two-shift basis. The capacity has further been enhanced to
1,00,000 units annually in February 2008 . The capacity expansion was necessitated by the
excellent performance of all the Honda models, particularly the growing demand for City in
India. Several modifications were done by the company with the objective of offering higher
quality products to its customers, faster and quicker. The expansion process also included
expansion of the covered area in the plant, from 1,07,000 sq. m. to 1,31,794 sq. m.
HSCI currently produces the All New City, Civic and Accord models in India and the
premium SUV, CR-V is sold as a fully imported unit from Japan.
The company operates under the stringent standards of ISO 9001 for quality management and
ISO 14001 for environment management.
Honda Siel Cars India has a strong sales and distribution network spread across the country.
The network includes 87 facilities in 53 cities. HSCI dealerships are based on the “3S
Facility” (Sales, Service, Spares) format, offering complete range of services to its
customers.
The City is manufactured with 79% indigenisation level and currently enjoys 25% market
share in its segment.

With comparatively higher rate of economic growth rate index against that of great global
powers, India has become a hub of domestic and exports business. The automobile sector has
been contributing its share to the shining economic performance of India in the recent years.
With the Indian middle class earning higher per capita income, more people are ready to own
private vehicles including cars and two-wheelers. Product movements and manned services
have boosted in the sales of medium and sized commercial vehicles for passenger and goods
transport. Side by side with fresh vehicle sales growth, the automotive components sector has
witnessed big growth. The domestic auto components consumption has crossed rupees 9000
crores and an export of one half size of this figure.
The overview
As per Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) the market share of each segment of the
industry is as follows:.
Consistent growth and dedication have made the Indian automobile industry the second- largest
tractor and two-wheeler manufacturer in the world. It is also the fifth-largest commercial vehicle
manufacturer in the world. The Indian automobile market is among the largest in Asia.
The key players like Hindustan Motors, Maruti Udyog, Fiat India Private Ltd, Tata Motors, Bajaj
Motors, Hero Motors, Ashok Leyland, Mahindra & Mahindra have been dominating the vehicle
industry. A few of the foreign players like Toyota Kirloskar Motor Ltd., Skoda India Private Ltd.,
Honda Siel Cars India Ltd. have also entered the market and have catered to the customers’ needs to
a large extent.
Not only the Indian companies but also the international car manufacturing companies are focusing
on compact cars to be delivered in the Indian market at a much smaller price. Moreover, the
automobile companies are coming up with financial schemes such as easy EMI repayment systems
to boost sales.
There have been exhibitions like Auto-expo at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi to share the technological
advancements. Besides, there are many new projects coming up in the automobile industry leading
to the growth of the sector.
The Government of India has liberalized the foreign exchange and equity regulations and has also
reduced the tariff on imports, contributing significantly to the growth of the sector. Having firmly
established its presence in the domestic markets, the Indian automobile sector is now penetrating
the international arena. Vehicle exports from India are at their highest levels. The leaders of the
Indian automobile sector, such as Tata Motors, Maruti and Mahindra and Mahindra are leading the
exports to Europe, Middle East and African and Asian markets.
The Ministry of Heavy Industries has released the Automotive Plan 2006-2016, with the motive of
making India the most popular manufacturing hub for automobiles and its components in Asia. The
plan focuses on the removal of all the bottlenecks that are inhibiting its growth in the domestic as
well as international arena.
OVERVIEW
India’s car market has emerged as one of the fastest growing in the world. The number of cars sold
domestically is projected to double by 2010, and domestic production is skyrocketing as foreign
makers are setting up their own production plants in India. The government’s 10-year plan aims to
create a $145 billion auto industry by 2016.
According to McKinsey, the auto sector’s drive to lower costs will push outsourcing. The
auto sector could be worth $375 billion by 2015, up from $65 billion in 2002. McKinsey
thinks India could capture $25 billion of this amount. Out of 400 Indian suppliers, 80 percent
have the ISO 9000 certificate—the international standard for quality management.[4]
Domestic Sales
The cumulative growth of the Passenger Vehicles segment during April 2007 – March 2008
was 12.17 percent. Passenger Cars grew by 11.79 percent, Utility Vehicles by 10.57 percent
and Multi Purpose Vehicles by 21.39 percent in this period.
The Commercial Vehicles segment grew marginally at 4.07 percent. While Medium & Heavy
Commercial Vehicles declined by 1.66 percent, Light Commercial Vehicles recorded a
growth of 12.29 percent.
Three Wheelers sales fell by 9.71 percent with sales of Goods Carriers declining drastically
by 20.49 percent and Passenger Carriers declined by 2.13 percent during April- March 2008
compared to the last year.
Two Wheelers registered a negative growth rate of 7.92 percent during this period, with
motorcycles and electric two wheelers segments declining by 11.90 percent and 44.93 percent
respectively. However, Scooters and Mopeds segment grew by 11.64 percent and 16.63
percent respectively.
Exports
Automobile Exports registered a growth of 22.30 percent during the current financial year.
The growth was led by two wheelers segment which grew at 32.31 percent. Commercial
vehicles and Passenger Vehicles exports grew by 19.10 percent and 9.37 percent respectively.
Exports of Three Wheelers segment declined by 1.85 percent.
Scope of Indian Automobile Sector
The Indian automobile industry is going through a phase of rapid change and high growth.
With new projects coming up on a regular basis, the industry is undergoing technological
change. The major players are expanding their plants and focusing on mass customization,
mass production, etc.
As it is seen, the total sales of passenger vehicles - cars, utility vehicles and multi-utility
vehicles - in the year 2005 reached the mark of 1.06 million. The current growth rate
indicates that by 2012 India will overtake Germany and Japan in sales volumes.
Financing schemes have become an important factor in the growth of automobile sales. More
and more financial schemes are coming up with easy installment plans to lure the customers.
Apart from domestic production, the industry is consistently focusing on the automobile
exports. The auto component segment is contributing a lot in the export arena. The liberalized
policies of the government are now making the companies go for more and more exports.
The automobile exports are increasing year by year. According to the Society of Indian
Automobile Manufactures (SIAM) automobile exports in the last five years are as follows:
Export trend over the last five years
NEW LAUNCHES
The Indian automobile sector is experiencing changes in every arena. Changes in the looks of
the vehicles are taking place; the vehicles are being made more user-friendly. Each and every
firm is competing to give the customers more customized vehicles with respect to speed,
mileage, and maintenance. At present there are many new models entering the Indian market.
To name a few, Suzuki Heat 125 and Suzuki Zeus 125X are the two bikes in the motorcycle
segment; Kinetic Blaze and Honda DIO in the scooter segment; Maruti's Zen Estillo in the
car segment, so on and so forth.
The engineers in the automotive or electrical or mechanical field are in demand. Some of the
firms going for automation, i.e. planning for CAD (Computer Aided Designs) systems, are
also recruiting people with IT specializations.
Indian Car Market
Indian Car Market attained a huge volume over the years with the increase in the opportunity for
new investments in the manufacturing of cars in India. The increasing GDP rate, the rising per capita
income, growing population and high ownership capacity led to the boom in the Indian Car Market.
Governmental strategies:
The Government of India have taken some initiatives like the liberalizing the foreign exchange and
equity regulations, relaxing the tariffs on imports and redesigning the banking policies which have
boosted the Indian Car Market to a great extent. Thus, the demand for all types of cars from
luxurious models, SUVs to mini-cars have reached a height in the Indian Car Market.
Future prospects-
The attractive prospects of the Indian Car Market have prepared the ground for a large number of
multi-national automobile companies from Japan, U. S. A., and Europe to come here and work in
collaboration with the Indian firms. It is expected that with this growth rate of the Indian Car
Market, it will be the third largest automobile market of the world by 2030 after China and the US.
The reason behind the immense growth of the India Car Industry can be attributed to the availability of car
loans, affordable rates of interest, smooth repayment facilities and the deductions offered to the customers by the
retailers.
The constant changes in the existing car models with regard to design, innovation, technology, and colors, have
led to a fiercely competitive market. Now that technology and innovation are not alien concepts for Indian car
makers, Indian cars are becoming increasingly sleek, stylish, and luxurious.

Known as The Fit in Japan, the first generation Jazz had also received this
award. In fact, Honda has won the award five times in the past ten years.
There are just three trim levels in Jazz -- the S, SE and Sport SE. In S models,
you will get power steering, electric front windows and twin airbags. Move one
level up, you'll get alloys, CD player, ABS and air-conditioning in the SE
model. The top SE Sport model has nothing more than others but it offers front
fog lights and subtly racier looks.
Honda would position the small car to fit into the lower excise duty bracket.
Small cars with a certain specification of engine capacity and length attract
lower tax, which is 16%, than bigger cars, which attract 24% tax.
You may fall in love with Jazz at first sight. Get inside, it can comfortably seat
five adults with their luggage. An intelligent dual and sequential ignition system
(I-DSI) has been used. This puts two spark plugs in every cylinder, which
betters fuel combustion and decreases emission.
Depending upon the brand and type of cars, dealer location ensures that the potential customers get
the best of strategic advantages. The ambiance and the customer service are equally important. The
customer should feel welcome at the car dealers place and the more a car dealer is able to generate
that sort of feelings among his potential customers, the likelihood of car sales is to increase.
Customer Requirements
Sales associate at the new car dealer's place should be able to understand the exact requirements of
the customer and accordingly explain the traits of the car that matches his needs. In addition, s/he
should understand the customer preferences and likings and the auto dealer should ensure that all
such feedback is reported back to the concerned company that will help them to make the changes
in the car, if and where necessary.
Impact of Global Recession on Indian Car Industry
Indian car industry is one of the most promising car industries across the globe. It has gradually strengthened its
foothold in the international arena as well. The country is dealing with many car manufacturers, dealers, and
associations in various different countries including U.S. From some countries, India imports cars and car
components and to some India exports. With this, the global recession is obvious to have its impact on the Indian car
industry.
Though India has witnessed a growing customer base, it has not inoculated them from the global
crisis. The crippling liquidity and high interest rates have slowed down the vehicle demand.
However, the falldown started in July with a decline of 1.9% and thereafter the industry saw a major
slowdown in October 2008.
Business Analysts reported that Indian car market had recorded a continuous growth of about 17.2%
over the last few years but this year the recession has brought the growth to about 7-8%. Be it Tata
Motors or Maruti Suzuki or even Mercedes-Benz, the car market has gone down to a tremendously
negative terrain.
Tata has reported that its profit fell from 34.1 percent to 3.47 billion rupees because of the slower
growth in the industrial production. Further, the company has also recorded a 20% decline in the
sales as compared to last year.
Maruti Suzuki reported a 7% decline in sales due to rising cost of the materials and a falling rupee
value. Even Mahindra & Mahindra, the India's largest SUV and tractor manufacturer, is not
immunized, showing profit fall of 20.6%.
In the recent months, banks and car financers have disbursed the approved loan because of the cash
crunch. Payments from the OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturer) have also been delayed and in
most cases banks have deferred or disbursed the approved loan. OEMs take this loan from banks
and financers for establishments, capacity expansions, or even for the requirement of high-end
equipments for car designing and production.
In addition, the uncertain exchange rate and a sudden increase in dollar value against Indian Rupee
have contributed to the slowdown. Increasing dollar value has raised the landed cost of imported
machine tools and even raw materials required for production by about 14%. Alloy and steel prices
have also not shown any reduction in their prices and this high price has actually forced the car
manufacturers to hike the car prices. To make the matter worse, it is believed that steel
manufacturers across the country are looking for re-imposition of custom duty on steel. Increased
