foundation for academic, moral and social success. A Williams School
student embodies integrity, confidence and a love of learning.

Honor before Honors

Dear Williams School Families,

This week we had Owl Awards during our assembly on Wednesday. I know I spoke about our
assembly last week, but I think these awards deserve a mention.

The Owl Awards are given to middle school students and only happen a few times a year. The award
is not a trophy, but instead it is a special change to a school t-shirt. I hope you've seen our “Honor
before Honors” shirts. They are the ones with the word "Honor" on the front and "Honors" on the
back...get it?

Well, these shirts are specially embroidered for this award and have the words "Owl Award" stitched
onto the sleeve. We have these shirts embroidered by Eggleston Services who "...envisions a
community that values the abilities of all persons, and endeavors to improve quality of life at work, at
home, and at play." Eggleston Services' expressed values of "Integrity, Choice, Empowerment, and
Quality" are an excellent fit with The Williams School mission and motto, and we are proud to work
with and support their mission. In order to get an Owl Award, you need not be a perfect middle
school student. In fact, grades are not figured into the equation. It is truly about trying ones best at
academics which is a key aspect of the award as is personal integrity and trying to do the right thing
especially when no one is looking.

This round of Owl Awards went to three students. One from 6th grade, one from 7th grade, and one
from 8th grade. E.C., B.A., and B.M. all were described as trying to look on the bright side of things,
trying hard at school, and trying to be a good friend to all. Students and teachers all have stated that
these are students whom they respect and trust. Anne Hastings, middle school coordinator, stated
that there were many students under consideration for this award but these three stand out at this
time. Others will have their opportunity and there will be more Owl Awards in the future.

My hope and dream is that there will be a whole middle school full of students wearing an “Honor
before Honors” t-shirt with expertly embroidered "Owl Award" on their sleeves. I'd like to think that far
from a dream it's a real possibility at The Williams School.

Take Care,

Jay
